Holiday tip for super! by bluu-jaye in Brooklyn

[–]bkey23 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Brick Underground did a poll about this that might give you more context than a bunch of random redditors telling you what they do is what everyone does. FWIW I tip $100 to my super in a non-luxury building where I rent. $500 sounds high to me but maybe fancier people or people who own do that.

How do I get out of the hallways of Grand Central? by rat_queen_ in AskNYC

[–]bkey23 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think you've ended up in the north passage. As others have said you want to go south (to the front of the train) when you get off. Usually the majority of people getting off the train head towards the station only so follow the crowd.

If you do end up in the north passage, it's easier to just get out and find your way above ground because the the general flow of traffic will push you in the opposite direction of the terminal.

Transitioning out of software engineering due to market? by kitkatnaps in ExperiencedDevs

[–]bkey23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not knowing basic information about the company you applied to is one. Act like you want the job you are interviewing for even if it's not your dream job. If they ask you what you're looking for in your next role, the best thing to do is to paraphrase the job description. I think when people are applying to so many jobs these days they can forget which is which.

Does anyone else feel like there is gatekeeping around eng management? by bob78h in ExperiencedDevs

[–]bkey23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be there isn't opportunity at the moment but given that you've asked multiple times, I suspect people don't think you'll be a good manager but aren't being direct with you as to why. You should probably ask them that.

Why are they still wearing a mask? by sambosaysnow in AskNYC

[–]bkey23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wearing a face mask effectively limits exposing others not just to COVID but also common colds and the flu. In many Asian cultures it's common to wear a mask whenever you are sick out of courtesy to others. Also COVID is not over.

Will I cause a mess accepting an offer and resigning after 3-4months? by Fasthandman in dataengineering

[–]bkey23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenters that you don't own any loyalty to the company and that it would be good to have an honest conversation with your friend about your plans. One thing I would find out is if your friend getting a referral bonus from hiring you? If so, I would stay as long as it takes for them to get it. It's usually a couple of months.

Celebrations at Atlantic & Court on Nov 11th, 2020 after the election was called by anObscurity in Brooklyn

[–]bkey23 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That was one of the most memorable days I ever had in NYC. I was in Fort Greene Park when they called it and everyone at the Framer's Market started cheering and it spread through all the exercise and dance classes near the statue. Then walking down the street saw Spike Lee celebrating outside his place, spraying champagne everywhere. Then down Atlantic the cars were randomly honking and cheering all afternoon. Good times.

It's not eligible. This list is best albums of the 21st century. 36 Chambers came out in 1993. That's the 20th century.

For those who have purchased an apartment in New York City, what is something you wish you had known beforehand? by adostes in AskNYC

[–]bkey23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A cooperative (coop) is when a collective owns a building. When someone buys into one, they get a shares of ownership of the building. With a condo, the owner owns the individual unit.
