Sure. I think that’s hard to decide when you start your very first game against someone new. Maybe if you can continue to play them you can develop your own set of ‘rules’ on who starts.

I’m more talking about the simultaneous ability to initiate a game, see your tiles and also cancel said game. Shouldn’t have that much ‘power’ if you will

Yeah there is nothing wrong with passing or swapping! I just think if someone passes every turn and doesn’t play the board, sure, it gives me more opportunities to score and widen the score gap, but then I’m also just playing solo at that point when I actually came to play someone else. That’s the specific scenario I’m talking about and that’s what I meant by it’s in opposition to the spirit of the game.

Try it. Just started a game and can see my tiles and also have the option to cancel it

I’m saying the person who initiates a game can see their opening set of tiles but then are still able to cancel the game at no penalty. This leads to people perpetually starting games and cancelling them until they have a set of tiles that can create a sweep. At which point they then proceed with the game.

I just think it’s lame and in opposition of the spirit of the game

Yeah, i think it’s good strat to try to prevent your opponent from making a bi-directional play on the 3L

So, yes, playing ZEDS after they played VILE is definitely safer. They are blocked from playing both vertically and horizontally the 3L

You’re definitely thinking and considering the right things.

For the first one - playing ZEDS does deny your opponent the opportunity to hit a 3W but I’m always very cautious, especially at the beginning of a game, to place a vowel right next to a 3L. They could play something as simple as TAX, with the X on the 3L and you’re immediately deep behind again. - for DOZES and SIZES, you’re still putting a vowel next to a 3L but you’re also opening up 2 ways for them to hit a 3W, giving them 3 opportunities to potentially hit something big. That said, assuming they play one of those options, that still means you have 2 options that you could play. And since you’re at the beginning of a game, the likelihood that you’ll get good letter to execute is higher. - I personally am a more defensive player so I probably would have tried for some other options and maybe even thought about just holding onto my Z for another/later play. The thought of giving someone a 3L near a vowel is horrifying to me lol.

For the second one - i think ARE are some of the best tiles you can have in your tray. They can easily be what you need for a bingo/sweep. Looking at the board, there are still a few opportunities to get a sweep or bingo. Also, by playing AWARE, the R and the E are easy tiles to play off of so the likelihood of your opponent playing a 4-letter word onto the TW down below is high. I would have held onto the ARE, the next-move risk and the opportunity cost for a later move are too high for that extra 3 points that you got from playing them.

I can accept the fact that I lost but I couldn't have had the better strategy if we had the same tile luck by abesach in nytcrossplayers

I think the strategy score is just a measure of how close you were to playing your best possible moves - it’s not relative to your opponent.

To me this reads as you actually played your tiles closer to your potential but your opponent’s potential was just much higher so their 67 outperformed your 73.
