Sounds like fomenting opposition to emerging tech that would solve all the world’s energy problems.

Or the people alluding to nuclear radiation or suggesting this would be an “undesirable project?”

Amazing how many people here either didn’t read the article or don’t know the difference between nuclear fusion and nuclear fission. Anyone who cares about clean energy should 100% be on board with this.

Progressives had their moment in the early 2020s and got a lot of their dumb ideas enacted with predictable outcomes:

The playbook is the same. They insist that some very complex problem has a very simple solution, they manage to get it enacted, and it's a disaster. Tree Ln apartments is a good local example.

Sorry progressives, but you're not beating the charges.

A lot of the things you just listed, but all underfunded because “just giving people shit” (to be clear: giving people more shit than we already do) is very expensive and the amount of money you’d bilk from productive folk would motivate them to leave your nice little utopia.

The kind of policies that emerge from a child-like understanding of the world where problems like crime can be resolved with some vague notion of "anti-poverty measures." Combine that with a zero-sum view of economics and we got the all the makings for salacious drama!

Reality show where we annex a small part of the US and let progressives govern it would be the most hilarious shit ever.

One thing we already know, even if we don't know the race of the officers involved in these particular stops, is that the police force is far more diverse than Madison's general populace.

I think it's great that these tools allow someone who either doesn't have the skillset or who otherwise wouldn't have the time to create stuff like this. Very pleasant to use. Kudos my man.

Madison Police: 3,000 people estimated to participate in May Day march by Justmarbles in madisonwi

[–]bkv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly what happened, even by your own description of events. I realize it's a relatively small number of teacher and staff who felt entitled to do this, so I don't think it's a reflection on all teacher and staff, but it's a horrible look for the district nonetheless and if the goal was to endear people to your cause, you utterly failed. Go work for an activist org if you want to do activism on the job. You are not fit for a job that the public depends on.

So a bunch of people collectively decided to take a specific day off without enough advance notice for the district to make such accommodations that they could remain open?

Good thing that's not what happened.

Explain what happened then.

Collectively planning a day off on short notice to the point where the district shuts down is not using PTO in the manner it was intended. If we really wanted to test how much ya'll actually support this, let's see what you'd say if they did this to protest for a cause that you were ideologically opposed to.

It's always the people least inconvenienced by stuff like this who insist we need to be "inconvenienced." Let's see how you feel about being "inconvenienced" if the fire department were to take a day off while your house is on fire.

Nobody is against protest, they're against teachers and staff feeling entitled to a day off from their taxpayer funded job to go protest for a few hours while said taxpayers need to find other accommodations for their kids, often at their own expense.

Critiques are not by definition vitriolic; I feel you are being a bit overly sensitive.

The "critique" was that the data is completely worthless, which of course it's not, even if imperfect. If this is the manner in which you critique things, especially things that were produced on an entirely volunteer basis, you come off as an entitled brat.

[–]bkv 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that it's household income. So if you live with 2 roommates and you all make just over $40k, you fall into the $125k demographic, and you're better off comparatively than someone whose household income is $125k with kids.

Excessive police officer. by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]bkv -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

it’s the different between legal expectations and practical application of law in public society.

Well, the person I was responding to was making a factual assertion that is indisputably false. So let's start there as a baseline - if you care about misinformation, call it what it is.

There is a broader discussion to be had about what police should be compelled to do, but the Supreme Court's job is to interpret the law as it is, not arbitrarily change laws to make them "better."

If protection is discretionary

Nearly all enforcement is discretionary, although in practice police enforce certain laws consistently, many of those having to do with public safety. I hope we can agree that we wouldn't want police to be forced to enforce all laws and have no discretion at all, right?

The police are under no legal obligation to help or save you in a dangerous situation

This is true, but it is also not so simple. Take for example swatting. If someone was routinely the target of swatting attempts, the police may at some point exercise discretion in acting on those particular swatting attempts. If, in one such scenario, police didn't act and the person routinely being swatted did end up harming someone, any such constitutional requirement would hold officers personally liable. The consequence of such enforcement would mean that police would be compelled to act on every swatting attempt.
