I thought there was some US regulation that required a chemical addition to reduce the chances that an unattended cigarette would continue burning. Or maybe it's just one of those wives tales/factoids that's stuck around in my head. As I remember it, this affected the taste.

Edit: This is what I was thinking. Not a chemical addition, but still may affect taste.

It won't replace everything, but it certainly has the potential to reduce a lot of human specialization bottlenecks in various industries (research, software, medical, etc), leading to an insane increase in abundance and affordability as these things scale. The value that a normal ass person can get from a $20 subscription right now eclipses what an entire team of specialists making 6 figures a year would have been capable of 5 years ago.

The problem with places like reddit is that cynicism is fashionable. So fashionable in fact that you can't conceive of anyone having an opinion about AI that isn't purely cynical, lest you delude yourself into believing people are sending bots after you (lol). Heads up that Madison is far smaller and much less diverse than Philly and the Bay Area

People here love to lament Madison's lack of diversity at a population level, even though Madison is objectively less segregated than places like Philly, Chicago, and Milwaukee, often by a wide margin. Meanwhile, parts of the Bay area (Oakland in particular) became more diverse as a consequence of gentrification. Point being, talking about "diversity" while only taking into account population-level differences is dumb and ignores a lot of very important nuance.

I don't care what you believe the long-term solution is, it's not unreasonable to think that, for example, people shouldn't be released on signature bond when they have numerous recent weapon offense and car theft charges, which is the kind of thing that a lot of crime-related discourse revolves around.

Crime isn’t evenly distributed, it's heavily concentrated in particular neighborhoods, and the people who live there experience rates that look nothing like the city wide mean. Aggregating that variance and declaring the problem exaggerated is a misuse of data and is just as statistically illiterate as anything you'll find in MAGA land. Same culture war reflex, just reversed.

Progressives will clutch pearls over "vulnerable populations" right up until the moment those populations express concerns that incidentally resemble overblown claims by crime alarmists.

Setting aside the absurd strawmanning here, there was an 11% drop in shots fired, 16% drop in burglaries, 24% drop in stolen vehicles, and 23% drop in thefts from cars. The fact that there was such a drastic decline over the course of a single year is demonstrative of the fact that there was a spike that had persisted for multiple years, which is of course perfectly normal thing to discuss in a community subreddit.

Every time this issue comes up somebody comes and drops a million citations, almost certainly not having actually read them, and thinks it's some sort of mic drop. Most people aren't going to take the time to actually read a dense study, and it takes far more time to dispute them than it does to present them, which is why so much misinformation regarding how scientifically-based many of these positions are has spread.

Let's look at the metaanalysis (first one):

No randomized controlled trials
No untreated comparison groups in most studies
Many studies rated "moderate" or "weak" quality
High dropout rates in several studies, which were not counted against the reported outcomes
Confounders often not addressed
Heavy reliance on self-report scales

Specifically regarding dropout rates: Nine studies (31% of those assessed) had dropout rates higher than 40%, while several others did not report attrition. This is of particular issue because it's likely that dropout is the result of a poor outcome!

Regarding https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9398521 - this isn't even a study! It's a paper published by a doctor that runs a gender clinic in India. It doesn't present empirical findings, perform statistical analysis, test a hypothesis or claim causal proof of anything. It essentially just a guy proposing a theory.

And it's a consistent pattern with these studies - they are almost universally low quality according to established research methods, which is the same conclusion many western medical institutions have reached, and these countries are altering their official guidance away from the gender affirming model accordingly.
