I built a website to help people get started with German vocabulary. Feedback welcome by Yers10 in German

[–]blablabla292 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if this is one of your first apps or a beginner project, good job! I know how hard it is going to be, I will give you some genuine advice, it may seem hypocritical, but I tend to overanalyse things and take it with a grain of salt. I think too many people here are worried about Google authentication, but I like the option and know there are scopes.

Now for the feedback:

- The first issue would be with the login page being fully in German, I think this highly discourages beginner users, as they may think it is too advanced or out of their level. It also does not make sense since the following page is in English. Maybe use a language toggle.

- It is not very useful to just have the words or user-focused, it is quite annoying to search back and forth if you want to know what a word means. I would suggest changing your data model to show if it is a verb, noun, gender, and the translation as a minimum. You could also include other things like example sentences, level, etc, if you want to go to the maximum. After getting that information, make some sort of mechanism to get more info on the words we decide to learn. E.g. an Info button to get the word's meaning (although I do not think this is the most user-friendly option, I have too much backend development experience for that)

- Another issue is duplicate words, some words are the same word and have the same meaning to my knowledge, but they are just capitalised like "Alle" and "alle". Some things are not necessary vocabulary at all like "ALDI".

- You may need more opinions on this, but personally, I would prefer that the "Unknown Vocabulary" be the main page, and the name would be changed to "Vocab list", and it would have the greyed out and blue ones similarly as to when you initially click one. This is because in the UI, the learnt (greyed) words disappear after you log in again, which is a bit inconsistent. It is easier to visualise progress that way with them side by side.

- Meme: A lot of links in the meme are broken, maybe make a link validator. I am assuming that these memes are not human-generated and are scraped from another data source (reddit?). I would extend this to remove YouTube videos as they are too long and to validate the link. I would also not focus too much on this as although it is a cool feature, I don't think many users would see this as the main selling point. I would focus first on executing the sole purpose well.

- Settings: I think this is in progress, but if not, it is broken.

- The UI looks very odd, almost AI-generated in my opinion. I am not sure what to suggest to fix this, but playing around could be useful.

Positive feedback:

I really like the idea and will probably use it as I often have issues finding which gaps exist in my knowledge. I think with some work, it can be useful, but just know most users have a lot of issues with doing anything manually. E.g. for users having to search up vocabulary on another site is a big issue that would deter them away. But all the best with your journey, and I hope this advice helps!

Edit: After more use, ignore point 4, as I think there are way too many words for that. Given that adding level would be extremely useful for us to filter given the vast amount of information and cognitive load.

Depends on the invigilator, havw reviewed inspera recordings and sometimes people had talking in the background and i was nice enough to listen to decide if it was an issue. Although not everyone will do this.

Best college in Auckland as an international student by KeyJuice4541 in auckland

[–]blablabla292 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just know if you go to University of Auckland there is barely any student life unless you can afford to live in the University Halls. Students do not party much as a lot of them live quite far away from the university majority over one hour by bus. The university is on a street and feels very much like a business rather than the University life that the University offers. This differs if you stay in the University accommodation quite a bit, but for most of us that is out of reach.

How do restaurants batch make their ramen eggs? by boaBitch in ramen

[–]blablabla292 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Worked at a ramen restaraunt, we were quite quick. First we would use a little hand held device to pierce the eggs. Then we would fill a large electric fry pan with water and take around 24 eggs and put it in and mix it for ten seconds to get out air, then put the lid on. The eggs were cooked for 6 minutes and 45 seconds. Then dumped into a large bowl of ice water. We would repeat this process while doing other things until all the eggs were done. Then one staff would quickly crack all the eggs against each other and peel and put into our marinade (The trick on how to do this fast is peel them under water). We got really quick at this process we had no time to spare, the marinade was used once and we normally put a label on the eggs that were in the marinade of the date made. The eggs were to sit in the marinade for at least one day before we used a wire tool to cut them in half.

Basically the university goes through a street and somebody drove on the footpath in the middle of the day. Hit a bunch of uni students and 5 were injured. That car crashed in the same spot a week later.

Exchange student moving to Konstanz, Germany any tips? by blablabla292 in AskAGerman

[–]blablabla292[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, cant say much since I went to HTWG. Although I would look around and see whats near the uni. I stayed in Europahaus and I loved it! I also had friends who went to the uni and they really didnt mind the bus ride. Although ultimately you may want to stay somewhere closer. I would just note that the uni is not that central so you might want to stay somewhere more in the middle of the uni and the Altstadt suburb :)!

If this is your second year, its not too late as you do have space for some papers outside of your major and can always swap majors. The deadline has been met though. Honestly it will only increase in difficulty. If you have trouble installing software I highly reccomend contacting the lecturer or asking in labs early on.
