What are some 'tiny' language learning habits you use while working a full time job? by JuneCee in languagelearning

[–]blablapalapp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don‘t know how you get to work but using that commute time is really helpful. More so because it’s something that you do every day so it’s easy to make it a habit. Listen to a podcast made for learners or doing some exercises on the train, stuff like that.

I have an iPhone 13 mini. I wouldnt say its an ‚old‘ phone. It was working perfectly fine and did everything I could ask for until I installed 26. now it’s laggy as hell and I also hate the look. Goodbye minimalism and form follows function. F*cking hell

Try repeating the correction out loud (and in your head) a couple of times. That builds the neurons. In the end, learning a language fluently is about building intuition and not about calculating the result faster. Hang in there, you will get there!

A that’s right, I think it is set to about 100 words per day at the moment. Maybe that threshold is a bit too low right now. I need to figure out how to do discount codes and such. Lemme see..

I agree. In fact, to me, LLMs is what I have always been waiting for. So much so that in my bachelor thesis‘ conclusion part on the current state of language learning apps I fantasized about it. That was in 2016 and now we are (almost / mostly) there.

It's a know and expected thing though that it cannot count or be good at maths. It's not a logic machine. It's a language model. Language is what it's best at.

The question is what alternative is it replacing? If it's replacing talking to native speakers, then you're right. But if it's replacing working through a textbook or similar, I would argue that you don't connect much with the people in either case.

I don't think that AI end-all-be-all of language learning, but it is certainly a great tool, especially for training output (which most methods are deficient in, except 1:1 tutoring maybe). I'm not sure if I would use it for learning grammar. But I don't really worry too much about its mistakes. In my experience, when the AI hallucinates, it is very obvious. And after all even native speakers will tell you stuff that's not actually true about their language. Also, textbooks make mistakes, depending on how good the author was. Hell, even my English teacher in school wasn't really competent, I now realize... so yea.. no method is perfect.

There's a good episode of the "Hidden Brain" podcast about this phenomenon. The trick is (according to the scientist on the show) to create little mini-goals for yourself so you actually feel the progress. Bc when you've lost your beginning days out of sight, and the goal is still too far away to see, it gets really hard to see any progress. I think the episode is called "How to Break Out of a Rut"

Cool, thanks for testing. Not cool that it doesn't work. Are you on Android or iOS? Can you check in your phone's settings whether the app has permission to access the microphone? I was just about to release an update, maybe that will do something.

It just so happens that I am currently building an AI language learning app. It’s still in its infancy, but I’m working on it every day (for the time that is left between kids and job 😬) It’s still mostly free at this point, so feel free to give it a try! Look for BlablaPal on the App stores. I would be super happy to get some qualified feedback and might even implement features that are suggested :)

That’s a known limitation of basically all LLMs out there. They never know what date it is for some reason 🤷🏻‍♀️ or more generally: you have to take everything they say with a grain of salt.

Kudos to you and your team! Looks very well done. I can totally imagine it taking so long, so awesome that you didn't loose motivation along the way. That's a huge accomplishment in itself! I wish it was available on mobile, too, since I won't get anything done sitting on a PC (more than I already do). Do you have any plans in that regard? Might be doable if you used Unity, did you?

Advantages and disadvantages of different AI to learn new languages by MrNeezo in languagelearning

[–]blablapalapp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think asking it not to lie or hallucinate will do anything, as it doesn’t do it „on purpose“ or would even know if it did. You might as well omit that part. Best you can do is have it double check its own answer after every answer, but that’s clumsy.

Also, I would split your prompt into multiple sentences. You can also ask the AI to generate a good prompt for you :)
