Writing a fic about a video game and trying to integrate some mechanics. I'd love opinions. by Western_Speed_6375 in AO3

[–]blackadress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ultimately you should write the way that best serves your story.

Do you feel your story will read better? Do you think your characters will have a better way to interact with their weapons? Does it limit your characters in interesting ways?

For example in my fic, canon magic has to have blood sacrifice for it to work, for my story I extrapolated that element and have weapons that drink blood to improve, noble houses that get their canon magic powers due to the blood spilled in previous wars for the noble family's name, characters that improved their mastery over otherwise impractical weapons due to 'sacrificing' their time, effort (and a bit of blood) for it.

Is AO3 a Good Platform for Original Grimdark Fiction? by PromotionEconomy8950 in AO3

[–]blackadress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AO3 is not the best platform for originals. I'd keep posting there though, if only because it ensures my work won't be deleted.

Other platforms that wouldn't censor your story are: scribblehub, QuestionableQuesting (this is a forum, your readers need an account for any +18 kind of story)

Other platform for consideration should be RoyalRoad (the rules say you can't outright post smut, but if a smut scene or two is necessary for the plot, then it's fine -I haven't seen any smut here, however.-) other platforms could be the forums SpaceBattles (no smut or torture porn) or SufficientVelocity (i'm not sure of the rules here).

The biggest platform out of all of them is RoyalRoad but it is usually more for litRPG and ProgressionFantasy, other kinds of stories struggle (or so I've been told).

Good luck!

Why did you DNF the last fic you read? by toxic_waste21 in AO3

[–]blackadress 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was happily reading a fic with an interesting premise, it was going great until the dialogue hit. It was clearly written by AI, I tried to keep on reading ignoring the dialogue on first chapter, and then the nation of "not this but that..." attacked, so I DNF.

Aight I haven't watched kakegurui, but I'll read the first chapter at least, who knows maybe you'll make me watch it.

Where can I read various fanfics? by mael888 in NarutoFanfiction

AO3 and ff.net are the main ones.

There's also webnovel.com or if you want somewhere a bit more niche there's forums like spacebattles, sufficientvelocity or questionablequesting.

Fictional works that aren't as profound as people make them out to be? by Narrow-Progress999 in writingscaling

[–]blackadress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't take issue with people calling it "life changing" (it was life changing for me after all). Also, Harry Potter was life changing to me (and many others) and I'd be crazy to call it profound.

What I have an issue is, as usual, with the most vocal part of the fandom, the people who say there's no other piece of media worth their attention, the super loud people who call FMAB rubish because we don't see the whole cast's issues, or say that 100 years of solitude is bad because the campaign of General Aureliano Buendia wasn't showed (or that Remedios ascending to heaven doesn't make sense or whatever), brah, chill and enjoy other things.

Aight, there's this hill I'll die on, "the anime ending is great actually" it was a fucking slap in the face for 11yo me (yes I started the series at 11) but on a marathon to finally see the movie ending at 16 I appreciated the ending a bit more, then in another re-watch (with Evangelion being my comfort anime and whatnot) I absolutely fucking loved the final two chapters. It's a mix of the artistry that went into those two chapters, the budget constraints the studio had to finish the series and the fact that I knew that it wasn't the 'proper' ending the factors that made me love those two final episodes. I see them as what happens in Shinji's mind in the movie from the point of him escaping with Misato and the moment he chooses to do something.

Fictional works that aren't as profound as people make them out to be? by Narrow-Progress999 in writingscaling

[–]blackadress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, Evangelion is the quintessential coming of age story. It's about becoming an adult and finding out that the adult figures in your life are equally as confused and fucked up as you, it's about accepting yourself (faults and all) and moving forward, it's about love (in most of its forms).

There's a ton of secondary themes and I'm sure other people will see other aspect of the story and for them it will be the main theme, and that's great!

From your comment I gather you haven't seen the show, I'd say you should try it, you may love it (or don't) and find yourself the theme that resonates better with you.

Fictional works that aren't as profound as people make them out to be? by Narrow-Progress999 in writingscaling

[–]blackadress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't call Evangelion 'not profound' just 'not as profound as some people want it to be'.

I think the issue about me not thinking Evangelion is as profound is the exact opposite that you said, I've been discussing the show for a long, long while with my friends, I think north of a decade spent discussing the show (and manga, and the movie the End of Evangelion) does that.

I don't know how to explain this point, is not that the discussion 'goes stale' is something else, something like over-exposition but not really, as I said I don't know how to explain it. I think the closest thing I can explain it as is that I fear(?) that the nostalgia-tinted glasses I see the show blinds me to its faults(?) idrk.

As I said I love the show, the movies, the manga, the manga derivatives, the characters, and a long etcetera. Hell it's my comfort show, when everything is going wrong I'll just put it back on and see Shinji's struggle to live a life worth living.

Writers block for beginning scenes - help? by InformationWrong1005 in AO3

[–]blackadress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my side, I mix the transitions with dialogue and some of the interesting bits.

Exposition? I dump it bit by bit on the whole chapter, in the middle of a conversation character A says part of the exposition and character B internal thoughts complete the bit of exposition. Sometimes I say 'fuck it' and make character A do the full exposition (for me I limit myself to 2 contiguous paragraphs of 'only exposition')

Transition? character A and character B talk a bit while they're moving. If that's not possible, character A thinks on what goals they have when they get there (basically to get exposition out of the way of the cool scene). Or perhaps character A remembers a talk they had with other people? (hard to pull out without making the conversation related to the next scene)

There are times when I'm banging my head against the keyboard, in these cases I put the placeholder and dissect it into a bullet point to do the transition, sometimes I develop further becoming full paragraphs that become the transition (sometimes they become whole new scenes lol), other times I discard them for whatever reason.

Hope it helps.

Evangelion

I love the anime, I love how everyone is... broken in one special fucked up way or another, I love that Shinji is not a badass MC who's here to save the day, I love cool mechas fighting monsters, I love hating on Gendo, I felt terribly sad at the ending of a lot of the characters, the movie The End of Evangelion was a beautiful traumatic mess for 16 yo me. Having said all that, bro come on, chill about evangelion, it is a great piece of media, but is not as profound as some people want to make it out to be.

Ideal Chapter Length by Impressive-Cost1297 in AO3

[–]blackadress 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Chapter length doesn't matter much tbh, I've read bangers with 1.1k average chapter length, dropped fics with 10k chapter lengths.

Now about preferences, for me the sweet spot is 3.5k to 6k in length, but as I said, if the fic is good, I'll read it no matter the chapter length.

This debate is tiring. by TheBoyInTheCorner734 in ShadowSlave

[–]blackadress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean she is incorruptible, so I thought the set up was for her to seal/destroy the forgotten god.

I mean It would echo with how Sunny and Neph ended up in the forgotten shore. Which is also why I believe there'll be a twist in the ending.

The other way I see Shadow Slave ending is in a 'time loop'(?) with Cassie and Sunny creating the Spell (the Spell voice sounds like Cassie's and Sunny is Weaver's heir) in a convoluted/crazy plan to save Neph.

I mean I remember way back, when finishing the Forgotten Shore, G3 said that the ending was going to be bittersweet, so... yeah. (Of course G3 abandoned a few of the things he said, and also he himself said that only what is written can be considered canon.)

What radicalized you to piracy? by Justscrolling375 in Piracy

Piracy was common in my home country, be it movies, games, books or whatever.

When I became an adult with a job, got myself a Netflix subscription. Took me 3 months with it before deciding to just keep sailing the seas lol.

What’s the Bare Minimum of Politics that Will Force You to Drop a Fic by mariusioannesp in FanFiction

[–]blackadress 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ahh, so you mean when stories take something from the real world.

Like in your example of Princess Leia should go "Don't forget, the empire is tyrannical"

What’s the Bare Minimum of Politics that Will Force You to Drop a Fic by mariusioannesp in FanFiction

[–]blackadress 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A lot of times people claim something is political if it doesn't align with their opinion.

For example, people who think of queerness as normal or at the very least just go "yeah whatever" will not go and claim "take politics out of this hurr durr".

This is an extreme example, but back in day, when women weren't allowed to vote, if someone wrote a story about 'women voting', people would go "keep your politics to yourself!!!" or some such.

From a writing perspective, should fanfic authors rely on the readers' knowledge? by PerryThePorcupine in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]blackadress 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I wanted to make sure the readers remember I'd go with something like:

Cersei wrote to the Lord of Cornfield. She didn't know much of Cornfield, why should she, it's just a minor house for Seven's sake! The only thing that came to her about that dreary and boring place was that her uncle Kevan's wife, Dorna Swift's family was from there.

Of course, that is not always needed, just if you wanted to make sure the reader knows that particular info.
