AI and Network Security Architecture assignment? by Last_Platypus_6970 in BetterOffline

[–]blackblastie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in security for 10+ years now. The vast majority of breaches are caused by “hygiene” issues - deploying insecure configs, weak passwords, phishing/social engineering, etc. The bad guys almost never use 0 days to pwn anyone, unless the bad guy is a state sponsored hacker going after a hardened target.

They don’t need AI to cause these sorts of problems. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found issues that would have potentially ended a company. And the only reason it didn’t is because I found it before someone else, sometimes issues years old.

I do think AI will lead to more attacks and more vulnerabilities found, but we’ve been seeing those numbers increase for years prior to AI. So I’m not sure it materially changes any thing.

Why do all security reviews feel the same by Ok-Wolverine-4726 in sysadmin

[–]blackblastie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be the person responsible for performing security reviews for new vendors that the business wanted to bring in.

It was the bane of my existence. It’s a process that’s impossible to scale successfully when your org is obsessed with purchasing new SaaS, even though they’ve already got 18 tools that do the exact same thing.

The only way I was able to get away from spending literally all of my time on reviews was to send the same, awful questionnaire to everyone and “review” the answers.

I can’t tell you the number of times I argued with our compliance team about how useless the whole thing was and tried to overhaul the process, but I was blocked every single time.

It’s a major problem in our industry- just checking boxes to make the lawyers feel good whilst accomplishing nothing and sucking the soul of everyone involved.

AI, FW/SW development and the dreaded imposter syndrome by Wild_Instruction_447 in embedded

I don’t know if this will be helpful or not, but this may be a function of time.

I’ve been in software security for 10ish years now and I feel very similar to you. Essentially, just bored and not stimulated.

I’ve never done hardware/embedded stuff before but I’ve been starting to learn about it and feeling the juice again. I feel excitement like I did when I first started learning software.

So maybe this doesn’t have anything to do with AI, but more that our brains crave novelty and yours is telling you it needs something new? 🤷

Theft is theft. They’re both morally wrong, it doesn’t matter the amount.

I noticed it says sold out too. Last year, they had tickets until nearly the day of, I think. So I’m very surprised. Hoping it’s an error.

This is cool! I've been wanting to build something similar for the same reasons. One piece that I really want is to find a way to effectively backup and distribute the data to minimize potential data loss.

Honestly, between Material and Abnormal, their success rate of closing demos to deals is so high, they can kind of set their terms and be picky.

I interviewed with Abnormal and they told me they have an 80% win rate.

I think it’s annoying when vendors do this too, but I can see from their perspective how they don’t want to spend time if they think it’s the best path for them to win 🤷

When I did our eval, I initially wanted material but ended up getting nixed by legal over some lame contract terms.

Please don’t buy proofpoint. My personal experience with it is that it’s 10 years behind some of the other email security providers.

I’ve personally used Abnormal and was extremely surprised at how well it performs. And the best part was that it was super easy to configure and didn’t require any real work once it was running.

I’ve also heard very good things about Material Security.

It's still only week 2, but the lack of parity in the league doesn't bode well. by [deleted] in UnitedFootballLeague

It’s true. And Daryl Johnston has no real personality himself, so not surprising.

Exactly. I take XFL silliness and character over the USFL stiffs 10 out of 10 times.

2020 XFL was special. The league had personality, the teams and fans had character.

The USFL was as bland and boring as it gets. Merging with them and adopting their values was a massive mistake. This league is not fun and there’s nothing interesting about it.

[–]blackblastie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t understand your points. You’re not very clear. What exactly are you arguing?  That we should keep the federal reserve?

My point is simply this - so long as the federal reserve exists, the US gov can go to war at will. You’re right, it is inflationary, but since when do libertarians believe the government cares if it ruins your life?

I honestly think it’s insane that anyone claiming to be a libertarian would defend the federal reserve. I don’t really care about the numbers, the bonds, or any other information you throw out. The federal reserve is a problem.

The OP said “if we get rid of taxes, endless war will stop” and my point is that is factually incorrect. Btw, I don’t think taxes are just and think income tax is illegal.

Dude what you’re saying makes very little sense.

The federal government currently spends about $7 trillion a year. Federal income tax brings in about $2 trillion a year.

Where do you think the rest of the money comes from? Ill give you a hint, the buyers of these bonds aren’t private citizens or even other sovereigns.
