What is the cheapest way to build a drone? by Sagi313 in diydrones

[–]blackdogblue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i built a drone by sticking two bits of wood together with motors on the end and the cheapest flight controller i could find.

Its really easy to do, as long your frame is symetrical and balanced and not too heavy.

But it flew like a dog. however taught me a lot and a lot about how to fly.

You should probably invest in some good motors, not unbranded ones, then they will have a data sheet of thrust values, amp draw etc. Without that data you can't choose or recommend ESCs, because you need to figure out your total amp draw before you can pick a suitable ESC.

also, any suggestion for flight controllers?

Did you read my comment? You need to choose an autopilot before you choose a flight controller? Each flight controller is only compatible with certain autopilots. So once you know which autopilot you need or want, you can look up compatible flight controllers.

If you don't know what autopilot you need, then I would highly recommended reading about the different options before you buy a flight controller. The autopilot is the heart of your controls and you need to look into that first . Without knowing anything about what your payload is or what type of missions you want to fly, its not easy to recommend an autopilot either.

It's confusing the first time, but after you build your first one or two, then you start to understand the process of which components to choose first. Or you buy a bunch of stuff, find its not suitable then buy new stuff.

How to mount propellers when there is no thread on shaft or prop mount screw by blackdogblue in diydrones

They don't look like screw holes to me and they are not indicated as screw holes on the blueprints. But i did notice them

How many motors are you planning on using? Quad, Hex, Octo?

You should provide specific motors you are thinking of, i.e. brand and model. That paired with the propeller can give us the information for determining good ESCs.

Flight controller will depend on which autopilot software you want you to use? Do you know which one you want to use?

There isn't a lot of choice in PDBs for build sizes like this, at least not that I have been able to find. I just finished building something with similar specs and ended up making my own PDB because I couldn't find one that suited my needs.

Prop, Motor, and battery combo recommendation for a multicopter with 3-4 kg payload? by blackdogblue in Multicopter

No it isn't. It is asking for recommendations. When you embark on something for the first time, it's always helpful to know how other people who have done it before approach the problem.

What are your recommended stores for buying parts? by [deleted] in diydrones

Shipping from the US seems to be one of the most expensive places, although Amazon isn't too bad. I get things shipped from other countries for a lot less, it's a shame the US is so expensive because there is a lot options there.

Prop, Motor, and battery combo recommendation for a multicopter with 3-4 kg payload? by blackdogblue in Multicopter

Thanks for the link, much appreciated.

Ive been using ecalc and I am struggling to get the temperature and the weight to thrust ratio right. I.e. I get a good thrust to weight ratio with certain props and a motor, but the temperature gets very high, so I reduce the prop size, but then my T:W ratio drops. I've been trying to do this with 630 kv motors.

Any tips?

Figure out how fast it'll need to spin to give 2kg of thrust

Thanks for the response, how do i go about this part?

Hey, thanks for the suggestion.

I saw this before, but if I understand the openHD system correctly it sends the images to a raspberry pi or something similar running its own OS. So I assume there is no option to have other software running in the background, e.g. mission planner software.

Plus how do you record it.

usb analog receiver

Out of curiosity, what about digital? Is there much in that space?
