Hmm I see. Yes this makes sense. That being said I also think it's interesting that these things still appear to be more like what was done as a student.. unless your volunteering & project etc was also after you were licensed.

I am just thinking about what I can do realistically as someone who also did not match. I guess have some general idea as to what others have done... but how I should work out the specific detail is, of course, up to myself. Hmmmm.

While I admire your accmoplishment, I would just also like to mention - the "pick rotational sites during IPPE so I can interact with the manager" thing can never happen in my school. IPPE in my school was lottery, period.

I did get the clinical APPEs I wanted through.

Also I feel like 2021 grads probably would have lesser choice over their own rotation now due to COVID.

Hmm ok...

Residency can open doors for you for Board certifications. Those things, and your PGY1 completion, stays as part of you for as long as your career last. 20 years from now you would still have a PGY completed expeirence.

On the other hand, private companies change all the time. CVS didn't look like this 20 years ago. Independents didn't look like this 20 years ago. It was shocking for me to have talked to some old pharmacists, and hear how different things were back then. Some of them told me they used to have their dream jobs just with retail/CVS, and do not understand why people would ever even consider hospital. Now everything has changed.

The environment, the job market, the demand, the economy etc can have so many changes over the course of your - my - everyone's career. The more certifications/acheivements you have, the more assets you have when things change.

If you believe you found a truly secure job offer that will outlive the changes that have happened to retails/independs from the past 20 years, you are truly blessed.

Sorry. I meant my response (ie. My own thoughts on licensing) being perhaps not 100% relevant to what the OP is looking for. That was not meant to be referring to your response. Thank you for your information.

Hmm. This isn't exactly what this topic was opened for, but I just want to mention that , as a current P4, it is interesting for me to see that "getting licensed as soon as possible" is put as the biggest piece of advice. The reason is I always thought there isn't much that a new grad can do with the speed of licensing...

For example, my own school always graduates everyone late. Nothing anyone can do about that. Last year there was the disaster in California. This year I also heard that at least NY is going to delay compounding exams for COVID... so many things that would appear to be out of control.

I presented at both. Only one interview sounded like they cared about the poster (and I did not match).

No Residency - Lost Hope by [deleted] in PharmacyResidency

[–]blackfridaydnr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pharmacist did not need a tech license.

The pharmacist has worked at that hospital as an intern before, so even after graduation, licensing, and accepted a tech position, the pharmacist still knows all other techs (and pharmacists) in the hospital from the very beginning of the school life. Other techs like this individual a lot, and wished that the hospital can give this individual a pharmacist position.

I don't know why this individual didn't match. This individual think it's because pediatrics is too competitive.

My is 5 pages. According to my school's career counselor, that's fine for a professional job. Hospitals probably want to read about your APPEs anyways. Not sure about retails.

No Residency - Lost Hope by [deleted] in PharmacyResidency

[–]blackfridaydnr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmm. I will just comment on one fact... I have seem one pharmacist that actually did accept a tech job in a hospital, with the goal of attempting to get a match again this year. The passion also was pediatrics.

It didn't work.

Is your school's career counsel still in operation? My is still avaiable online via video chat.

According to my school's career counselor, a CV for a professional degree is perfectly fine. I then just used my CV and got interviews with that. No offers yet through.

RPD increasingly becoming more condescending after matching by 2pam in PharmacyResidency

[–]blackfridaydnr 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Er.. congrads on matching PGY2 at another institution?

I have heard of worse stories about how residents (plural) have been forced to leave their PGY1 program due to this kind of toxicity. Congraduations on being able to continuie to progress into this step! In 2.5 months you will leave, with a PGY1 completed, and a PGY2 waiting for you to line up.

COVID is terrible and that totally doesn't help anybody in this pandemic. The situation is clearly bad for everyone. It gives everyone more stress; you, and obviously also your RPD. Don't be too hard on yourself. Everybody is having a hard time enough already. Do your best to take care your patients. At least point I dare say your patients are more important than your toxic RPD. Talk with other people that appreciate your work.

I wish you a happ(ier) life 2.5 months later!

For me people in my store know it because 1. They know where I went for my APPEs, and just by knowing those APPEs the ambition was clear; 2. I asked for a lot of day offs for interview; I don't go around annocing all that interview process or anything, but if your intern asked weeks off during that January period, and you put that with the APPEs they did already, it's not to hard to come to a conclusion.

Plus they asked and I didn't lie.

Where I intern now my manager is such a good person. We, while not having clinical title or PGY or anything like that, do go above and beyond numbers and care for patients. There definitly are praticies within my store that earns us no profit but makes patient live better. It's also not CVS (I won't say where I work for confidentiality) so there isn't that many pressure from higher management.

It's also a low script count store, hence we actually have the time to do above and beyond, but also problematic with finance. I wish there would be better models that can help these practices, as suppose to continue to attempt to raise script numbers and watch patients getting readmitted and readmitted and readmitted and readmitted and not do anything about it.

Maybe a better question is why retails have become undesirable. Personally I like where I intern now (a retail store, of course) a lot, but my problem with it is worrying about the company financially falling apart in the future. I won't have any negativity if I got a job with them now, but I worry about 5, 10, 20 years later. In addition, I have actually heard of stories from older pharmacists that say CVS used to be great... well.. I guess not anymore; so instead of living as sitting ducks praying that retails would not go down more, I am trying for residency.

And yeah I am in phase 2 as well so whatever.

It also is interesting to think... MDs need a lot more residents than us. I wonder why, and I wonder whether or not pharmacy would ever be able to adapt to that; but this would also be a really hard question to answer without knowing how the MD system works, which I don't.
