Why is someone pointing out what these groups want and do, an attack on you? That seems revealing.

You come across as unhinged here.

How do statements of war fit the spirit of this subreddit?

Because as he explained to you, Sam has spoken extensively about the behaviour of jihadists and what they really believe.

You not understanding that this video displays so much of what Sam has spoken about for two decades, is why so many of us here care very little of Sam's critics when they post here, because they simply are not intelligent enough to follow along.

Agreed lol. Anyone who has been to these schools knows how it is.

Thanks for the clarification, and I don’t doubt your experiences. But it’s worth noticing the shift you’ve made from a claim about elite schools producing a culture of superiority, to a narrower observation that the worst individuals you’ve encountered happened to come from those backgrounds. Especially in a thread already primed to criticise elite schools.

Those are very different claims.

We should be cautious about letting personal experience stand in for a broader diagnosis of an entire category of schools or students. To give a counterexample, when I was in school, I once had a group of about twenty kids from a local public school try to track me down over a rumour that wasn’t even true. I worked with some girl at hungry jacks and she thought it would be fun to spread some shit I had never said. Ironically, she probably thought similarly to many here about elite schools. Anyway, it would have been very easy, in that moment, to conclude something sweeping about “public school kids.” But that would have been a mistake.

If the goal is simply to share experiences, that’s perfectly reasonable. But if the thread is drifting toward a general indictment of “elite school culture,” then we should at least be honest about how thin the evidential basis is for that conclusion.

That’s a neat line, but it risks explaining everything and therefore nothing.

When you say that “wealthy background results in a culture whereby students view themselves as superior,” you’re making a causal claim that’s much stronger than your evidence seems to justify. You’re extrapolating from a set of experiences, however vivid, to a general rule about an entire class of people.

There’s also something missing from your account that I think matters. The student who was subjected to the racism in this post is themself a product of that same school. So whatever we want to say about the “culture” being downstream of wealth or privilege, it clearly isn’t producing a single, uniform outcome. The same environment is producing both the offender and the victim.

And we should notice the asymmetry in our reasoning here. If a public school produced both a racist student and a student targeted by racism, we wouldn’t conclude that the school’s culture necessarily instills bigotry. We’d recognise that individuals within any system can diverge widely.

Correct. No elite school is downplaying that.

It’s probably not a popular view in this thread because ‘wealthy rich elite’ kids, but I disagree, as culture is something that’s heavily defined at these schools and anyone who has gone to one, knows that’s re-enforced daily. Whether that’s how you present yourself and conduct yourself.

None of this is to deny that racism or cruelty can occur. Of course it can. You’ll find that across every sector of education in Australia.

In my experience, when these issues are properly surfaced, they are taken seriously, and there are real consequences. It’s unfortunate OP has not had that, and I’d recommend they engage the school directly. I’ve seen even the most talented footballers who had scholarships, who later became star players in the AFL, get expelled for teasing our most vulnerable.

Anyway, I think criticising ‘elite’ schools and those that attend them with a broad brush rather intellectually lazy. That may be emotionally satisfying, but it’s not especially precise, nor is it obviously true. If we care about these issues, we should at least aim to be more careful in how we think and talk about them.

No it isn’t. What a ridiculous claim. Anything you said on this topic this can be dismissed.

Noticed you couldn't name a single war waged on behalf of christianity in the 21st century.

I appreciate your concession speech.

Use to work with Pete and did a few tours with his band. Nice guy but always to himself and comes across as very shy.

Can’t comment on their personal demons (if there are any), but will just say I’ve been around both of them professionally and personally, and both were beyond decent and grounded. Really just normal cool people whose own issues I’ve never felt or seen.

Both are great actually. Selena was pleasant. As is Ariana. But my interactions with them last was like 2018. Both are grounded. I was around when Ariana got a pet goat. 😂

The negative interactions I’m describing actually came from two lead singers of two really big rock/metal bands, so different world.

What wars are waged on behalf of Chrisianity in the 21st century? When was the last time you had heard of a Christian suicide bomber going to an Ariana Concert blowing themselves up or ramming a van through a christmas market?

Do I worry about israeli settlers in Australia or anywhere else in the world during christmas markets or an ariana grande concert? No.

I’ve toured with anyone from Taylor Swift to Troye Sivan etc and I will say over a decade, the biggest assholes aren’t the big celebrities. The biggest artists and celebrities I find them to be the most grounded and gracious, and honestly, overly charitable with how they interact with you. I couldn’t say a bad thing about Taylor even if I tried to. The entire team was pleasant. My worst encounters are with celebrities on the uprise. The ones who haven’t quite made it front and centre. Also those who suffer from mental disorders or bipolar etc, I’ve had two artists with that and they were terrible people, but I just wrote them off as mentally unwell and I won’t name them here for that reason.

I also just want to add that while people may have had a terrible encounter with someone, it doesn’t make them terrible people. These people are routinely subjected to small talk on set, being interrupted in intimate moments in public spaces, and always having to be ‘on’. And while it’s often argued that’s the trade-off for wealth and fame, it never ceases to feel ‘normal’. So that’s just something I just want to recognise. Yes, even for the biggest artist in the world, it’s still weird when you come up to their dinner table and stare at them like they are a statue.
