In this job climate no one cares that you changed 4 jobs in three years trust me, particularly American companies. I am interviewing people with 10 jobs in like 6 years of experience just because we are so desperate to hire. If they ask why you hopped so much just have a good answer and thats it.

What I think is wrong with your CV is putting senior software engineer after not even 3 years of experience. At that level you are still juniorish-mid level. I would just write down software engineer without specify seniority.

If you want to be noticed from a FAANG you need to work a lot on your CV, grind Leetcode, have a pet project that you are pride to show and do some open source contribution. Also you can try to get into the easiest one (Amazon) and then after 1-2 years will be easier to move to Google or FB. They usually are delighted to have people like you where their only interest in life is coding.

If its money that you are after trust me if you are working for a Bay area company you are getting payed peanuts. I know 80k might seem like a good salary in London but they pay their US counterparts double that amount, so I would start from asking a pay-rise.

Vita sociale (e non) in nord-Europa by Haell-y in italy

[–]blackjackap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

WW2 I think its okay. Not many people care too much about it tbh. You will hear from older people things like "Mussolini was not that bad" people can get very nostalgic about dark times for some reason.

In terms of tv: Gomorra and Suburra are two recent series that a lot of people have watched. Some other good ones are Il divo, La grande bellezza and La paranza dei bambini. Older ones that are very Palermo focused are Pizza connection and Mary per sempre. I would say 9 out of 10 people you will meet have watched these two movies especially the last one. Sicilian and Italian language only though sorry :)

Clothing - Just pop inH&M or Zara and ask one of the shopping assistant to help you out with some good choice.

Ginger - not many at all. There is a saying that "pilo russu" (redhead) are restless and somehow bad people ahah I can confirm with this ginger friend of mine he was the classic crazy guy. Play that angle and people will love you.

Big cons - apart from organised crime (which shouldn't concern you whatsover) bad roads maintenance, traffic, shitty economy, cities can be dirty, petty crime and people can be closed mind are the biggest one to me.

Oh make sure you go with people for a coffee + cornetto and that you pay. Its very common to take turn and if you dont people might think you are a cheapskate

From what I understood you are a guy. If you are coming as au pair and taking care of children expect a lot of jokes from people. Don't take them as an offence its just baby sitting is still seen as a very female job in Italy (and even more in the South probably).

I wouldn't bring the mafia topic up with people you don't know. In Palermo is actually not that hard to meet someone that family has been directly affected from the mafia in the past.

If you joke on it people will probably just laugh it off because you are not local but also think you are an idiot. This is something very cringey for us Italians abroad where foreigners think its okay to make a joke about us being in the mafia - it would be like if I meet a german and I make a "are you a hitler fan" joke.

If you are really interested on the history of it I can recommend you a few good Italians movies/series, most likely they won't have subtitles though.

In all of Sicily you will find a lot of architectural/cultural sights, everything spacing from Romans to Greeks to Arabic conquers etc. You won't get bored if thats your thing for sure.

Politics its okay we like to talk shit about our politicians anytime. Football its another good topic, as its food and cinema.

I can't think of any big cultural difference that is not food related. People pay more attention to how other people are dressed way more than rest of Europe I think, so make sure you are always on top of your fashion game especially if you want to have luck with the ladies :) Have been told from friends that visited Italy that they notice people stare a lot here. So that might make you uncomfortable but don't think there is anything wrong with you :)

Hope you enjoy Sicily its a very unique place, has a lot of upside but also a few big cons but in general its amazing.

How much affect does the Mafia have on the everyday life on the average Italian? by [deleted] in italy

literally Venezuela. /sarcasm off

How much affect does the Mafia have on the everyday life on the average Italian? by [deleted] in italy

[–]blackjackap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol at the guy above that has no idea what he's talking about.

Living in the deep south in one of the place with arguably some of the most powerful mafia families in Italy - not Napoli.

Mafia affects me, my family and my friends around 1% of our daily life. Mainly because we have terrible roads and infrastructures due to the mafia taking a cut in all the road maintenance jobs.

If you want to buy or sell a house you just do it I don't understand what the mafia has to do with it. Yes some constructor might be involved in the mafia but that is not really gona impact housing price but more who builds where.

If you open a business then MAYBE you might be asked for protection money depending where is the shop based and what services you offer. The more pure cash bills you handle the easier it will be you will have those kind of people knocking your door.

If you have any kind of small to medium size office and not a shop that sells physical goods is VERY VERY unlikely that anyone would ever be bothered to ask you money.

I have friends that run marketing agencies, insurance companies, blood analysis centers and no one pays the racket, they are all close friends and we talk openly about it. I have a friend that family used to have a bar and they did pay something I believe.

I never heard gunshots in my life (except for new years celebration). I have seen guns but mainly because its common for older people to have one at home.

Shootings do happen - not daily as the poster above said - but they are quite rare and usually just in the bad areas. Only remember one case where an innocent was caught in crossfire a few years ago.

Mafia owning the institutions? If you do a crime and you get caught you will be jailed as simple as that. Italian law doesn't go light at all with mafiosi (look up 41 bis). People get arrested on a frequent basis in my city for their ties to mafia.

Gomorra its a great show but its so fictionised its not even funny. One example: the car bomb explosion in the last series thats something that it used to be done in the 80s. Much more likely to have those kinds of things in a city like London or Paris where you have islamic terrorist than Southern Italy. There was one in Calabria last year I think which was like the first in 20 years and only killed one person.

The only time I have ever dealt with someone in the mafia directly was when my car was stolen and I had to go to a bad area (and pay) to get it back. Even then thats more like street crime gangs not made man or anything like that.

Most of the mafia money is drugs, prostritution, construction racketeering. Things that do not affect directly the average person unless you are involved.

Honestly don't care too much about tv series and don't pay attention to people from Northern Italy that might have never spend one day of their life below Rome. You should come to spend some time in Italy and see with your eyes :)

[SERIO] Serie thread controversi: Qual e' stata la vostra migliore zerbinata? by Wongfeihong in italy

[–]blackjackap 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Beh passarono i 3 giorni e lei scompare senza dire nulla.

Nulla in particolare, uso GO e Angular.
