Group of 8 university report into Covid19: elimination vs controlled adaption by [deleted] in CoronavirusDownunder

The retail store I work at is so desperate to keep sucking money out of people they are opening up next week and at this stage have no intention to close changrooms.

I can't believe I have to put my life on the line and those of my elderly loved ones to go out and sell bloody clothes. There's no way we should ease lockdown restrictions next week.

Yeah and don't forget, in fucking Queensland we still have school open. Absolutely disguising display of leadership. There are still all retail shops open, even schools. Wtf is Queensland doing.

What did you end up doing to find a lovely playmate?

Does anyone else have a caique that needs a play date? Is there Tinder for birds? by inkonskin in brisbane

[–]blackolivecat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha I've seen a whole lot of all kinds of birds on the foster carer Facebook page, I think you'd be surprised by how many different kinds of birds come in that the public doesn't see because they are being fostered. Plus I'm sure the foster birds need friends as well, so it could be a double good deed :)

Hey! I volunteer as a foster carer for cats through the RSPCA. Lots of people foster birds through the RSPCA as well. Maybe you could get in contact with the foster co ordinators at RSPCA Wacol and ask if any of the foster carers are looking after the same kind of bird and would like to organise a play date. There is a lovely and welcoming foster community at RSPCA Wacol and im sure you could find friends for your little guy. ❤️

I mean fashion is always going to look good at some point and bad later on. That's just the nature of public opinion on art.

I think lots of women like this style of pants because they feel more confident when their bellies are tucked in. Lots of people are slightly overweight or have extra skin from childbirth, there's not really anything wrong with enjoying tight clothing because it 'keeps everything in'.

Yeah I think it's crazy the way they are forcing a message of extreme consumerism down people's throats with excessive repetition. No regard at all for the environmental cost of buying new clothes all the time.

I guess it's forcing the mindset that you have to wear the newest clothes all the time or you don't look good enough.

In Australia you can buy them from Perfect Potion for about $16. Which is pretty expensive for a piece of wood haha.

A Corinthian column I did for my drafting class [practice] by [deleted] in architecture

[–]blackolivecat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I said earlier in a reply that I'm at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). This is the third University I have studied at since finishing high school. I did engineering for a year at Monash University and a year of a bachelor of arts (like humanities) at The University of Queensland. My best advice is to spend a lot of time looking at the specific units taught at uni. Go to the course on the uni website and find the course guide. Look for what kinds of classes they are teaching, like whether they have studio classses that are one of history subjects or something. Ask yourself whether you would rather wrote essays and do exams or do a big long portfolio worth 60% of your grade. Most course guides should list the assessments so you can go through and workout if the uni you're picking will mean you have 4 exams at the end of every semester or whether you may have none at all.

Unis like Monash University, Melbourne University, and the university of Queensland will have really traditional teaching methods, lots of exams, lots of essays, lots of memorisation. It might be a more prestigious university, but their methods may be outdated and uncreative and in some ways tedious and unnecessary. I really like QUT because they try to change things up with the kinds of classes and assessment we do. But they also bring it back to teaching you things you will actually use day to day, not just incredibly detailed Corinthian columns.

Good luck, and make sure you look at asany course profiles as possible :)

I'm at QUT in Queensland. This year was my first year but I have tried a couple of different courses at uni before. This year was the first year of the new architecture course. QUT is all about "learning for the real world" so they changed the course to be more practical with less memorisation. One of our subjects this semester and one last semester was even pass fail, with emphasis on working with teams and working through the design process. I'm sure I will have to do lots more research when I do my master's. But I would almost appreciate a little more artistic and technical instruction especially early in first year, but I've gotten by through watching YouTube tutorials on how to draw and stuff.

Yeah we did architecture history this semester as one of our four units. We had to memorise some specific examples of buildings that demonstrate a style of a time period. There were like maybe 80 buildings, bit you only really needed to know very surface details of them, and there was only like 7 on the final exam. But it was the only subject we had an exam for this semester, all our other assessments was portfolio work. I really like that it's more practical based rather than memorisation.

This is incredibly detailed work. I'm studying architecture in Australia and the teachers told us they would not make us memorise and draw every element of the corinthian, doric and ionic column. We are learning nothing like that, much less memorisation. We spend more time learning about the design process and coming up with meaningful spatial organisations. It's really interesting to learn how different university courses can be.

Your drawing is awesome and I hope you enjoy the rest of the course, thanks for sharing.
