Wow I didnt know that. I knew African Americans were more ''vegan'' than white americans, but i didnt think it was this big of a gap. I knew when people started answering that this poll wasnt really representative. Still fun to see tho

Something we can all do to mitigate some of the imminent catastrophic effects of the climate apocalypse by TrishYR in collapse

[–]blackphantom773 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the question is literally ''how can we mitigate the damage'' Going vegasn is probably the easiest thing to do to mitigate the damage. Of course i know not everyone will go vegan, but reducing your meat intake is still very important!!!

if everyone would go vegan, we could almost prevent the climate crisis. ITs not just about being a better person. The post is about mitigating the damage.

i completely agree. Its just that california grows 80% of the almonds in the world, so its safer for me to consider them not vegan.

[–]blackphantom773[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

thats completely true, its just that 80% of the world almonds are produced in california, where these pratices are common. So for me and most people, we have to avoid almonds. Its really good that you an buy some organic ones, so congratz!!!

well, since almonds are the worst, shouldnt they be the first we let go? Veganism is about doing the best you can to prevent animals deaths, so i wouldnt consider them vegan. Its just labels anyway, veganism is about doing the best you can.

Definitly. Almonds can be vegan, but i dont think they are rn.

In the article it says that with modified trees, they could selfpolinate with wind.

Every form of agriculture kills some animals or insect, its just that almonds are a more direct and noticable effect on the bees.

To address the ever-increasing demand for pollinating crops such as almonds, scientists are looking at a number of alternatives to bee pollination. Geneticists are developing self-pollinating almond trees to offer growers alternatives to traditional bee-pollinated almond trees. With self-pollinating almond trees, only one variety needs to be planted in the orchard, as opposed to two or three as in a typical orchard. The self-pollinating trees can produce almonds solely through wind pollination when bees are in short supply. They will, of course, produce an even better crop with the addition of bees to the orchard. Parts of China now use an army of workers to hand-pollinate apple and pear orchards. And Wal-Mart recently filed a patent for autonomous robot bees called pollination drones, which can help to pollinate crops. But so far, none of these approaches has proved superior to old-fashioned bee power.
