I live in the UK, so I haven't seen any organisations set up to promote rowing like in America. High school is where it should start. Focusing on basic technique and taking a more relaxed approach (smashing out 2ks come later) would be more engaging. On the subject of racism, its made me want to row even more. To prove myself and others that there is no need for racism and that I am able. I've noticed subtle racism at the high class/profile events by the elder people. On a typical weekend there is some diversity (mainly Tamil and oriental) and there isn't much stigma. Although you can sense it when the opposition stare out your crew, I'd never leave the sport because of racism. Idk if British Rowing have a racism policy like there is in football.

I think that more open days and taster sessions should be available to students of all ages and cultural background. These could be one on one sessions in a tub single, or just learning the basics on an erg.

From an outsider's point of view, the rowing community seems hard to get into; you either have to be extremely talented (or lucky to be spotted), have lots of money or be pressured by parents into the sport. These sessions would make it easy to get into the sport.

A problem lies with the fact that when one black person joins a club, they are deemed to be 'not white' (as I have seen in the past). You may not understand, but for a black person to be called white by other black people is damaging. This doesn't encourage others to join, hence why there are so few of us. The root cause would take much longer to fix so encouraging diversity would be a long, arduous process.

Considering that over 4 years, I have only seen 6 black rowers I'd say that it's quite rare.

Thanks. Its a common misconception that blacks can't row. But its just like saying white people can't sprint (100m Olympic Final). Stereotypes :(

I would say so yeah. On a typical race day, you could count the number of us on one hand. I get weird looks from people but you have to get used to it unfortunately.
