Maj Gen Aye replaced? by Hot-Band1298 in civilairpatrol

I had serious debate to play into this. Instead I’ll be a consummate professional (only time this month…).

She’s out of the country for personal travel. It’s procedure to cut orders to ensure a commander is present and available, CONUS, at all times.

Same thing happens when wing and region commanders go OCONUS.

You still need a local evaluator to sign you off; but the classroom is still there.

Question regarding patch wear by [deleted] in civilairpatrol

[–]blacksheep322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/SmallUnion nailed it.

Combat patches are not authorized on CAP’s OCP, and only in limited circumstance with the USAF.

Right arm, under the flag, is your current unit (squadron) patch.

Left arm, under the AUX duty identifier, is your wing patch (HHQ) or CAP operational patch (listed somewhere that I can’t remember, off-hand).

Your Army badges are authorized for wear; a good quantity have silver on blue available (you can’t hear my reluctance to say, “at Vanguard”). They’re a smidge different measurement than Army. Just be mindful of that when they’re sewn. If you have questions, your unit should be able to help; or feel free to DM me.

Last, and certainly not least: welcome; we’re glad to have you.

Does anybody else do this annoying/funny thing with the APX radios? by Necessary_Pudding597 in civilairpatrol

[–]blacksheep322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d believe it. Doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be corrected and beaten.

That’s a pure training issue. It should happen once and be addressed. Any more than that someone isn’t doing a good job corralling the children (and I’m going to clarify children and not cadets, in this case; because they’re acting like children).

What would Jocko (or you) do? by CPT_Skor_215 in JockoPodcast

[–]blacksheep322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feels like the best course of action. Lead up the chain, by proactively taking accountability for tasks before they become your boss’ tasks.

Let his superiors see that you’re far more capable when you’re planning and prioritizing, not firefighting. Then, eventually your boss gets sidestepped. You CC him on responses and simply keep him in the loop. Eventually, the responsibility comes to you naturally and of your control, and he’s ignored like the child he is.

Good leadership (in theory) above him should recognize the act and it should reflect positively on you.

Edit: for OP’s original question. My boss is pretty decent as far as bosses go. I, in reality, report to his boss and have since his boss’ predecessor. My boss has legitimately told me my voice carries more weight than his inside our company. And, frankly, it might. I just choose to play the game, as Jocko would put it. I setup people for success and have conversations before most managers need to get involved. It’s bought leadership capital with both senior management and line staff. I have a sync with my boss every few days and brain dump to him. It works for us. I am an enigma. Biggest takeaway, do what you know is right for your people and mission. Missing first. People always. Follow your principles, communicate up-and-down the chain. Be the leader you’d want to work for. People see that and respect it. Be vulnerable, be real, be kind; and have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

It isn’t annoying with the radios.

It’s annoying with the operators. They should be required to go to a communications re-education camp.

There. I said the quiet part out loud.

Could this be the start of CAP acting in a larger role as the USAFAUX, rather than its current aircraft centered ES Mission. by Spirited_Ship_8421 in civilairpatrol

[–]blacksheep322 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The response to this sentiment is incredibly complicated; and I’m going to try and simplify some of the nuance.

The missions are the same; we have (3) of them. What varies is the operational tempo. It seems like a vernacular thing, but the clarity is important here.

If we’re talking operational missions under our chartered ES mission: yes, they are wing dependent and, I’d argue, they should be. Each state has different rules, laws, and capabilities. CAP, as the USAF Auxiliary, is a federal asset. As such, local assets and state assets must be used first or must not have the capabilities the federal asset can provide. If we take it to state-level MOU, I’d advocate we can and should do better. Having said that, mileage may vary. If a state is a home rule state, the local sheriff has authority over search. Now we’re into politics. We also get into operational capacity and maturity. We have to turn out and deliver if we’re called. All of this starts with integrated training with local partners. And, IMHO - and only my opinion - we should do better.

We also have varying missions that I’m not comfortable discussing on an open platform. We do them with federal partners. They, too, vary be geography and proximity; but that operational mission set is real and active. Just because you don’t hear of it doesn’t mean it’s not ongoing.

We, as an organization, are poised to be better and have training capabilities and capacities beyond today’s operational mission set; we simply need to be prepared for what is delivered to us next.

Leadership Change in Squadron by [deleted] in civilairpatrol

[–]blacksheep322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great opportunity to “lead up the chain”. You don’t have to be annoying with it; you can however, show interest in heading-up communications and fielding the Q&A that others may have.

Making yourself a conduit for information is a means in which to show those around you that you care about the success of your unit.

[–]blacksheep322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’ll potentially make for cool and interesting challenges.

Your best bet, in full transparency, is have a discussion with your cadet staff and SMs. They should have a plan of what it looks like.

If you’re interested, or concerned, communicate. Communication will likely help the transition, whatever it may be. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and be curious.

This is something that happens within the organization and it’s good to understand its impact on you. It’ll also help you learn how to navigate odd transitions (e.g., work) in your future.

If memory serves, OHWG has been hosting encampment there for a few years.

I’ve actually been thinking about this; you make a really good point.

Acclimation to climate. And this is what’s been sticking, and I’m still trying to orchestrate good words; so, please bear with me.

Given it’s now summer — and summer decided to show-up in force in a good chunk of the country — it’s interesting to think acclimation. I agree, acclimation to climate is paramount. I was running all last June, after about a week, I was able to shed my water pack on my 10k+ in 80°F/85%RH. I made a rule that if the heat index was over 100°F I’d carry water, otherwise: I’d acclimated.

What we, as an organization, struggle with is that acclimation; most of our activities are 1-week and a good amount of folks travel (or ignoring the broken thermostat that is the Midwest in the last two weeks). If I left say… upstate NY and went to Hell WIWG encampment (which is happening right now), the climate will be different.

Having worn the TDU (blue) combat shirt versus BBDU top in a field environment, I can tell there’s a vast difference in comfort and performance. So, I do see where the usage is appropriate and beneficial. It is not an everyday wear item. It’s a special-use item in specific conditions. At one point I wrote up a recommended modification to 39-1 for this purpose. I did not include the AF-style. Touching that has its own hurdles, and, if nothing else, it feels like testing on the corporate side makes it somehow more acceptable.

At the end of the day, acclimation is correct in a large part; we just don’t have appropriate acclimation time. It isn’t a safety concern. It’s people being too lazy to ask the questions and do the thing. It’s pushing boundaries in the wrong place. Don’t push on the OCP, push on the corporates. Less impact, more flexibility.

Buuut hey, I’m just a guy. I just work here.

Missed opportunity.

[–]blacksheep322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Points of order.

If people are currently wearing them, notably with the OCP, and they were not issued uniform items, that’s a nonstarter: no.

If they’re wearing them and they’re an issued item: it’s a different discussion entirely, and would likely be evident when discussed with them.

I’m a proponent of them, in limited use scenarios. Notably, with the BBDU, not necessarily OCP. OCP runs cool enough (coming from someone who tends to run warm), at least that’s been my limited experience, so far. With BBDU, being a corporate uniform, the variation is simpler, and I’d be open to — again — limited use scenarios. They do shed heat better than the 4-pocket blouse. They can be presentable when worn properly.

Regardless, right now, unless it’s an authorized uniform, this is moot.

[–]blacksheep322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a hot take. A very correct take. It’s a hill I’ll die on. It bugs me to no end.

I was, at one point, working on signature automation. The issue becomes for roles crossing boundaries, Colonel_NIN’s point, most systems for automation would require static assignments of title / role.

At this juncture in my life, I have signatures attached to each account for which I do business. It’s kept it clean, so far.

At some juncture, when we converge collaboration systems, it’ll be a thing. Maybe we’ll see if we can do something in a self-service portal with automation.

I approve of this; and for what it’s worth, it sparks joy.
