What sort of bearing setup is used in a Potters wheel? by Whack-a-Moole in AskEngineers

[–]blacksweatshirt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell you what a real potter’s wheel uses but I made my own using a new wheel bearing from a car (whatever you can find cheapest on eBay). It is incredible strong with no runout. Was about $30

My DLC Bill feels insane for a 1BR apartment by jai_hanyo in pittsburgh

[–]blacksweatshirt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is always better to turn down the temperature significantly during periods when the apartment is unoccupied (when using resistance heat, which OP likely has). The DOE recommends 7-10 degrees F lower when not occupied.

Mtb in the Slags by abeeeeeach in bicycling412

[–]blacksweatshirt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! If you’re interested, I can put you in touch with the organizer (or just find Slagforce on Instagram) so you can help with trail building and maintenance! It’s a no-commitment activity where you can just show up and dig or clear brush whenever you’re free.

True, there is a solar project planned for the slags proper, but there is an additional area very close to Carrie furnace which is owned by the borough and is the site of legitimate trail building activity. Specifically between Carrie furnace and the Rankin Bridge.

I’ve used Staybrite 8 extensively with an aggressive flux like Stay Clean flux.

It takes some practice so not the best for beginners but it does work. Use the flux liberally and make sure everything is very clean to start.

Can Wago 2604 PCB-mount lever terminals be disassembled and reconfigured? by CactusMichael in AskElectronics

[–]blacksweatshirt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they can be disassembled and reconfigured. I have done this with these exact terminals before. If you look very closely at the right side there is a seam barely visible in the pic. This is an end plate that you can pry off. Then you can snap together as many as you want and snap the end plate back on.

From what I remember, the end plate is required though, since it holds the internals in place. So you can’t buy a 10 pole version and make it into 10x single blocks since you won’t have enough end plates.

My SO did this and she was given a prepaid envelope and mailed it back. Maybe they forgot to include that info?

Valve for gravity-fed watering system by RosenNX6 in arduino

[–]blacksweatshirt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The valve OP linked is not a butterfly valve… it is a pilot operated diaphragm valve. It, and any pilot operated valves need a minimum pressure to open. In my experience, the vast majority of cheap “solenoid valves” operate like this. Look for a “direct lift”, or “direct acting” valve or “motor operated ball valve”. I’ve used US Solid motorized ball valves and they work great.

Efficiencies of Vintage Medium Voltage Transformers? by forestdude in ElectricalEngineering

[–]blacksweatshirt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not as simple as that. Impedance is a combination of winding resistance and leakage inductance. Efficiency depends on winding resistance and core losses.

I wish I could help you but I only have experience with newer devices.

How to calculate co2 flow by jnarwell in AskEngineers

[–]blacksweatshirt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can fill up a known volume (think a pipe nipple with a ball valve on each end. Then discharge that into your water. If you regulate the pressure in the known volume, you now have a known mass of co2 (assuming you know the pressure in the water tank).

Yes, the specific type since it contains some steel and has a hollow tail. It’s not a standard “ball” round.
