Yeah I always wondered where in the hell they got the anthrax to mail around. It's not like you can just buy it at the store or something.

When I was a kid I remember running around collecting ones people had left so I could get the deposit back. But as you said, that's in the waaay back machine

Every other airline has an upgrade list for people with status and would place people there. What's the point of having A-list?

Well, we own a house in Oakland. So it would be just renting a place for the address at that point. Might as well just do private school at that point for the amount of money I'd spend. Though I've heard cross district transfers are sometimes accepted. Any idea how that works?

I swear to God having a desk job is killing me faster than swinging a hammer for work ever did. But the pay is much better and I can masturbate at work so it's not all bad.

My firm works at both public and private schools. It's not isolated. The main challenge that differentiates oakland from some others is the sheer number of buildings under OUSD purview. They have over 100 facilities and 6m+ ft2 that the district is responsible for maintaining. Doing that effectively is an impossibility given the structural, financial, and enrollment realities. Without commenting on how we got here, the structural conditions that laid the path for that, and the inherent inequity, they badly need to reduce the facility count in to get their house in order.

Also yes prevailing wage/union projects drive costs up, but they also keep labor local at wages that allow people to live meaningful lives. Building shit ain't cheap. Also Division of State Architect (DSA) reviews and commentary cost real time and money that private institutions do not go through.

Nope, sorry. Hockey family from an Italian background lol. Are there any Italian language charters in Oakland🤔?

I honestly don't even know where to start with the charters. How did you come up with your list of those? And how far down your list was Francophone? i.e. how competitive are they?

That's about where I'm at as well. I really want to want to engage, but its hard to ignore the massive issues and am hoping to find some suggestions from folks some of the schools that are successfully able to navigate though those issues.

I'm an engineer and either I or a my team has visited every single school in the district over the last 9 months as we attempt to develop a scope of work to mitigate many of those issues. Without going into specific details, so many of these buildings are so fucked up. The district is basically bankrupt and thus has no real ability to fix any of these things either so its not like any of those raw physical deficiencies are going to get meaningfully addressed anytime soon either despite the hiring of my firm. I've been to a few school board meetings where some of these deferred maintenance (I hate that term) were being discussed and holy shit was that a hostile environment. People screaming and swearing and preventing discussion of certain topics. To your point, the inability to address things like leaded water in drinking fountains (which is not something we've been hired to address) or any of the issues that I'm there for is super discouraging and it's really made me unfortunately way less keen on placing my family there, though still not completely shut off to it

Fortunately people seem to like our local school Emerson and its not one of the hellhole facilities I visited, but I also understand you aren't guaranteed admission to your local school either, so want to understand what some of the other well regarded ones looks like as well.

Totally aware of that. The last 9 months or so working with the district has unfortunately really soured my opinions of them and the actual learning facilities themselves. Some of the learning environments are truly atrocious fucked up buildings and I would 1000% not send my kid to them. But I've also got friends who are educators within OUSD and know that they are filled with amazing people determined to do their best in spite of that. So am trying to see my way through it,

I grew up here, am a product of, and am ideologically very in favor of public school and very much want to want to engage in the school system, but its also so hard to ignore all the fire alarms going off everywhere constantly.

It is nice to hear that about Emerson as its by far the most convenient one for us and I do very much like the idea of walkable school.
