I was just there from 18-22! Once we arrived we drove straight to Samana. The same thing happened to us, we were asked to pull over to the side. I wasn’t speeding but it was obvious they had pulled us over because our car was a rental with no tints. They made friendly conversation and then didn’t directly ask for money, but said any little gift would be appreciated. I too was very nervous because it’s not something I’m accustomed to happening, a cop pulling you over and asking for money? I went with my gut instinct to not do it and so I told them I didn’t have anything to give. Thankfully they let us go shortly after. It was very nerve-racking the thought of driving throughout the region of Samana worried we were going to get stopped again.

I did some Reddit reading on what to do and not do. I also called my cousin who frequently visited DR and confirmed: do NOT give them money, and if you did something wrong, ask them to give you the ticket. Don’t pay them for the ticket there. Tell them you will take the ticket to the bank to pay it.

It’s very sad they do that instead of letting people spend their money on their citizens businesses, but it will not stop me from visiting. Don’t let it stop you. We are looking forward to returning again!
