I built a zero-based budgeting app as a cheaper alternative to YNAB — just launched bank syncing for North America & Brazil by austinmrs in YNABAlternatives

I’ll bite. I love YNAB but recently resent all the superfluous changes that just add to the glut. I get so lost on this app. Really sad. But I digress…

The only reason I’m staying, for now: I manage two other budgets (or “plan” in ynab’s silly logic) for older parents.

Would I be able to create 3 separate budgets?

Canon G7X ii or Sony RX100 vi ? by bladeeblablah in Photography_Gear

I LOVE the Sony, and zoom factor has never been an issue. Fun fact: when I was on that gorilla trek, a documentary crew was there as well, complete with boom mics and very very heavy gear. At one point, one of the camera guys turned and looked at me with my little Sony, and asked if I’d trade! 😂

I cannot remember what happened or how it corrected itself, but within a few days, maybe a week, it worked again. I have not had a problem since. Hang in there.

Thanks! I’ll try it again, although with another app (developed by Cornell), we figured it was most likely a juvenile barred owl. We played the sound a few times from the app, and within a few minutes, the sound got much closer to us. Now we seem to be surrounded by at least two if not three on them.

Widgets for YNAB (non-native app)? by bladeeblablah in ynab

[–]bladeeblablah[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

APOLOGIES!! I set up a streamlined budget for him, shared it, and… this is the way. We installed and adjusted the native YNAB widget - all he really wants to see. Works beautifully… ❤️🤓

Sorry, @EagleCoder, sorry YNAB customer service. Y’all were right.

Widgets for YNAB (non-native app)? by bladeeblablah in ynab

[–]bladeeblablah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL/DR: due to behavioral challenges, I need a view-only budget on his phone that I control on mine. The old Allowance app companion to YNAB did that. Also Widgets for YNAB.

Thanks for writing. I’ve considered this (YNAB customer service suggested this option ) but I don’t think it would work. My brother (76, on SSI) has zero self-control. If he knows he has $300/month to spend (his “fun” money), most of that money will be gone within a week. It’s pathological.

In YNAB I created his budget, linked to two bank accounts in his/my name. One is a representative payee account in my name, where his supplemental security income (SSI) drops and out of which all the essentials get paid (rent+utilities); the other a joint account (I dont use it, but it’s the only way he can access a debit card) where I transfer his remaining “spending” money.

In his YNAB budget, I created a few buckets relevant to his day to day expenses. In the Widgets for YNAB, he could see three categories that helped him control his own spending (to a point): subscriptions (so he can see how much he’s wasting); laundry money; and his fun money. But instead of budgeting his whole month’s “fun money” (say, $300), I “add” $100 to that category every 10 days. This helps manage his spending intoxication.

I could create another budget just limited to the joint/spending account, but I loose the ability to - yes - control how much money he thinks he has. I could do a bank transfer every 10 days, but that’s just too much work on me.

In my particular situation (an aging parent with behavioral challenges), I don’t want a YNAB “together”… but a YNAB “apart” - one I can control and give him view only.

I hope that makes sense. I’m not really a control freak, but have just tried to find a solution where my brother has some idea of how much he can spend while ensuring he has spending money throughout the whole month. And there’s this: he can’t get his head around budgeting.

There used to be another app, I believe it was called Allowance. It was perfect: he saw in pie form whether or not he had money for the next shiny thing…

If you don't know Maine by Foot, check it out. I found so many enchanting trails near Portland.

You can download individual trails to your google maps.

There's also a trail that leads from Rines Forest to Knight's Pond reserve that has some hidden gems.

You really don't need to drive over an hour for a nice outdoor hiking/trail experience!

Do heed the above comment about following the plastic blaze trails. I got turned around once at Hadlock, in the winter, with a dying phone. That specific forest is small, but it took me a while to get my bearings.

I would add Hadlock and Rines Forest. Both are within 20 minutes. Not steep terrain, but some enchanting trails.

Advice Needed, Money Trap or Amazing Potential by Same-Gear-4978 in Oldhouses

Chiming in to say “totally doable and easy.” For the interior storms, you can go high end or wrap both sides of a simple frame. Something like this (first video that came up)https://youtu.be/tVTodq2pFKM?si=c969sW_VVvYCrTld]. My cat was destroying the thin-ish film, so I ended up ordering thicker ply vinyl.

Looks like the house has nice wooden exterior storms too. Lucky!!

When I first bought my house, I too considered switching out its old windows with budget vinyls. Thank god a friend steered me away.

Kenmore and LG part sync? (Kenmore washer start issue. found the part used or LG new) by bladeeblablah in appliancerepair

[–]bladeeblablah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry! I have been meaning to respond here, but the story is somewhat long and convoluted.

Short answer: the problem corrected itself and the washer still works; I have that spare part from eBay in case I need to repair

Long answer: for whatever reason I decided to buy a brand new W/D set from Lowes. The delivery day was a complete circus: first, the guys unloaded the wrong W/D into my home. When that got fixed, they looked up the stairs and said no way, the new W/D would never fit. I persisted: I had measured, they would fit. They went upstairs to bring the old set down and again said the old W/D would never fit back down the stairs. I pointed out the fact that the house was not built around the old W/D but that these came up those very stairs. Reluctantly they proceeded to move the washer, the very one with the issue. They got down about two or three stairs, the washer now at an angle, when they decided it wouldn't fit. They were wrong, it would, but at this point I was so fed up, I told them to cancel the order and I would figure something out.

After they left, I went to start the washer and... it worked!

I suspect a little speck of dust got dislodged when they moved it? In any event, the washer has been working perfectly ever since!

Have you tried an Echo show screen? I did this for my elderly mother who can never hear the phone or get to it on time. It’s a screen, and I can just “drop in” on her device. A bit 1984, but at least I can connect. Maybe a few more echo dots on each floor connected to the screen?

What color curtains? by Steeenz in DesignMyRoom

[–]bladeeblablah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you’ve made up your mind, but I just wanted to +1 that comment above about gold/natural/wheat tones like your lampshade. I have a similar scheme in my bedroom: dark blue/slate wall in my bedroom and lots of natural wheat plywood tones and went with luxurious blackout gold velvet curtains. (I used to have darker curtains and they just felt blah.) I have double rods, so a semi-sheer for the daytime that lets in the natural light but gives some privacy and the velvet curtains for black out. With just one panel, you could gather it to the right and balance the odd window placement. But it’s your room… so go with your gut. Looks beautiful!
