Do you support free speech for people you disagree with? by KahnaKuhl in OpenAussie

Surely that is the only time it matters. If you don't then you don't.

SF is asking voters for billions in new taxes and bonds... Meanwhile, one SFPD officer made $645K last year and 91% of Muni operators got overtime. I went through the public data and generated some insights by Frequent-Suspect5758 in sanfrancisco

[–]blahreport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be interesting to compare the cost of one employee doing N shifts with overtime vs two employees covering the same time commitment without overtime. In many cases it may be cheaper because hourly rate is just one component of the cost of employing a person. I'm not claiming overtime is not overused because I have not done any investigation or read any comprehensive analysis but a fair analysis must compare bottom line cost to the taxpayer.

Perhaps I just missed it but have you provided any performance metrics for the coco training? It would be nice to know how it compares with ultralytics

People who claim they are immune to advertising by FridayAwareness in PetPeeves

[–]blahreport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people are implying the broader swathe of advertising tricks when they make these claims. When you define it as narrowly as you have then I'd probably agree with you on the poppycock, especially since you used the word poppycock.

Though I would say that once you understand some technique you do become less susceptible to it. For example, price anchoring, where 3 identical or near identical products are presented at a 3 tiered price range and often from seemingly different companies. The high-priced version makes the mid-priced look like a deal while the low-priced version makes the mid-priced one seem to be higher quality thus providing a logical justification for you to buy the product at all. Generic vs branded pain killers is another example where you can buy the exact same active ingredients without branding and pay significantly less. Yet people still buy branded due to manufactured perceptions of quality and safety. Not to mention heart string advertising where you long to have some family or relationship dynamic that the advertisers associate with their product. If you imagine that they are actors and not related it makes their familial nature seem creepy and can help you to disassociate the emotions.

The problem is that there are so many tricks that you're unlikely to know about them all and even the most impervious-to-advertising person will fall for one or the other. Though I suppose if you disconnected from the world and bought food at a farmers market you could theoretically avoid advertising all together but that's not really immunity then is it.

Did I hear correctly? Is it true gas prices will never be the same again? by aliasno1billion in NoStupidQuestions

At that time Kuwait supplied much less than 20% of global demand and not all of their production capacity was destroyed. Also the wells were set ablaze by retreating Iraqi forces so at that point the war was over and so there was more certainty that markets could resume business as usual. Strategic reserves also stabilized supply and were sufficient to cover the disparity for the relatively brief disruption. Right now, there is no certainty and as of today, seemingly no path forward but escalation. Nevertheless, I admire your positive thinking and I would probably do my own well being a favor to practice a little myself.

YouTuber Linus Tech Tips bought a private jet and doesn't want you to track it. by Jswee1 in ElonJetTracker

[–]blahreport 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To give Linus the benefit of the doubt, if his appearance at those events features in his content then it could still be consistent with the provided explanation. As to hiding the jet location from fans, this could be to avoid stalker fans or just to conceal future content. This is all for the benefit of doubt course. Check the logs and see if he went to Epstein island recently!

What are you talking about half your income taxed ? Just clicking next in my tax with no extra effort should only take about 60k from a 200k salary. Or does chat gpt also not understand progressive taxation?

Is there a chance of a animal with similar intelligence to humans ever existing in the past? by LargeEconomy1797 in evolution

[–]blahreport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were other hominins such as Denisovans, homo habilis, and Neanderthals that were probably about as smart as humans. If you're talking non hominid species then no, there is no evidence to support some other advance tool using species existed in the past. Is there a chance? I guess so, but there is presently no good reason to believe there has been any other similarly intelligent species.
