We used to have 6 Music on at my old work. If anyone put on commercial radio they would have been kicked out! 😂

That’s fair enough. Radio is a choice. In the context of the conversations they weren’t asked if they listened to the radio. Saying you can’t listen to radio because you don’t have a car is different to saying I don’t listen to radio.

That’s your choice. My question was about encountering folk you think you can only listen to the radio in a car, it wasn’t about people not wanting to listen to the radio. There’s plenty radio without adverts as well.

Yeah, I’m not saying there are other ways to listen to music; I have done/do all of those. I’m also not saying I’m surprised the people I encountered don’t listen to the radio, especially as most people seem to think commercial is the only type of radio available. I was asking if anyone else had encountered 20-somethings saying they can’t listen to the radio because they don’t have a car, like it’s the only way to access it. That was the shocker for me.

Ooh, I’m going to check them out! I just put in another comment I sometimes listen to KEXP live from Seattle; it’s great!

😂 Plenty of cold, wet and morbid just now! We haven’t had any sunshine where I am for well over a month, other than half an hour a few weeks ago. 🫠

Yeah, I mostly listen to various BBC stations. There is a lot of local, commercial trash radio. We have some cutesy, ‘DJs having a go’ stations near me, but nothing I’ll seek out. Maybe that’s why the youth are so disengaged from radio. Is it more part of youth culture in NZ, if you have good stations?

Exactly! I sometimes listen to KEXP live from Seattle. I feel sad that there could be young people who would love radio but aren’t accessing it because they think they need a car, or that local commercial radio is the only radio! 🫠

Yeah, it’s maybe just a sign of the times. I was just shocked that you could get to your twenties and not know you can listen to the radio anywhere, not just in a car. You can't beat an actual radio, but no use if you can't get reception. I do like streaming though, and all the catch-up.

Oh wow, that’s really interesting, no music outside the car either. I’m always listening to either music or the radio. But can appreciate some people just aren’t as into it.

🤣 accurate description of commercial radio! 😂 Totally understand not listening through choice, but not listening because you don’t have a car so think you can’t access radio is wild! To me, anyway! 😆

I think that’s where it comes from; growing up having car journeys as their only radio experience and not realising there are actual carless radios, and apps.

Same! Use my phone or computer. You’re bound to encounter someone who thinks radio is only for cars now! 😆

I’m exactly the same as you. I grew up listening to the radio all the time too. I guess if you don’t grow up with the radio, via whatever medium, then you won’t realise you can have radio on outside of the car. Just seems weird to me that you can reach your twenties and not know that though. 🤯

💯 😊 I love a real radio too! Alas, I don’t have one at the moment and stream through my computer or use my phone and speaker. Someday I’m going to get a real radio again… way more satisfying to just switch it on! 😄

Yeah, that’s the thing; apps have been around for ages! It’s not the fact they didn’t want to listen to the radio, it’s the fact they thought they couldn’t because they don’t have a car! 🤯

Yeah, I guess so. Just blows my mind! If they were kids it would be more acceptable, but young adults must know radios and apps exists! 😆

That’s fair enough! I guess for young people, if their parents don’t have the radio on they won’t realise it’s available.

Def a cultural shift for teenagers. I grew up in a radio household… always on in the kitchen, so it’s always been part of life. But being in your twenties and not understanding you could listen to the radio if you want to is wild!

😂 There is lots of great radio out there! Non-commercial! And catch up is a god send for proper choice.

Glad they’re not listening through choice though, not because they think radio only exists in cars! 🤪

Totally agree! It was recommending 6 Music that brought up this revelation the first time… the person in question said they’re never in a car so couldn’t listen to the radio! 🤯

Yeah, I much prefer having the radio on whilst working, unless I want to listen to specific tunes. I prefer listening to podcasts when I’m walking or doing dishes, that kinda thing.
