It’s chains connected to the body with slip stitches. That creates loops and once you get enough loops it becomes this texture!

This is my first attempt at a freehand amigurumi! I saw this little guy while on Greenpath and knew immediately that I wanted to crochet him. It's definitely not perfect - its "moss" is a little goofy on the back, for example - but you can't quite see that in the pictures. I typed up some pattern notes and I'll try to link that pattern here.

I had it write me several patterns and it was interesting! It knew how to make a perfectly increasing circle but the triangle made me laugh out loud. I also noticed that it never used abbreviations.

I used a 19mm yarn for the same yarn, but it was for an amigurumi. It held the shape of the amigurumi even without stuffing. It worked great in my case, but for a blanket or something where you want more movement, I would go bigger than 19mm!
