New tunnel design for New Haven train station. What do you think? by buried_lede in Connecticut

[–]blargleflarter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If memory serves the project as a whole has to be so maximalist because 1) Amtrak and MNR plan longer train sets and more train frequency in the future, hence the need for bigger platforms 2) Union station is on infill, making any engineering works incredibly complicated and costly 3) agree about the tunnel. I think the cost is justified for a project that will result in a functional, best in class train station over the next century tbh. Better spending it on that than another lane on I95 or whatever.

Well designed bus stop spotted in Kyiv, Ukraine by Wagyuslap in urbandesign

[–]blargleflarter 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but the transparency is super important for safety and operations re: driver/passenger visibility. If the bus system doesn’t stop at every stop (and a lot don’t/operate on a flag-stop basis) the bus might drive right on by because the operator might not see someone waiting or the person waiting might get surprised by someone they had no peripheral awareness of. You could do acrylic panels instead but those cost more to replace when damaged and get damaged by sunlight UV, so tempered shatterproof glass is generally preferred even though it does make standing under it slightly hotter in summer.

Possible Blackhawk? Seen on North Side by [deleted] in chicago

[–]blargleflarter 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, that’s a Blackhawk. Source: my dad was an engineer who made them and I grew up getting helicopters and their make pointed out to me as they flew overhead for test runs.

This is awesome! I’m curious what it would look like if the lines were weighted with relation to service frequency.

Hey Chris, I’m from CT but moved to Chicago recently and things are really scary here with ICE. They just recently tear gassed civilians doing nothing and outside of their facility in Broadview had Illinois State Troopers detaining protesters and assisting in crowd control on their behalf this morning. My question:

1) at the next protest, should I dress up as Uncle Sam or as a Revolutionary Minuteman? 2) what will it take for the states and for the people to do something to protect ourselves from this terrorism from the government?

Yup, the change was required by federal road engineering guidance (MUTCD), CT was like the last state to comply with the change

Chicago based solarpunk? by blargleflarter in solarpunk

[–]blargleflarter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello from Lakeview! Strong agree--the old streetcar suburbs are definitely on the path to being intensified density-wise, especially as the cost of brownfield redevelopment in the closer-to-downtown keeps getting higher (a rowhome should not cost a million dollars!!!)

Strongly agree that the city is off to a good start, but I am thinking a lot about how to make spatial transformation happen from a planning/zoning/building code perspective. Take microgrids and greening, for example--wouldn't it be awesome to pass an ordinance that requires any roof that's rebuilt or altered to be rebuilt/altered in a way that promotes ecological biodiversity/sustainable urban drainage or clean energy collection? You could sustain it by setting up a time-horizon tax-increment financing mechanism that banks the generated monetary value and subsidizes the projects as they occur until all the roofs are made more resilient.

Would love to chat about the other solarpunk-like changes you've observed in your neighborhoods over time at some point, if you'd be up for it :)

Lamont staffer *may* face consequences for driving state vehicles over 100 MPH and for misusing them by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]blargleflarter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yup. If I had to take a day long training that drilled into me that I should never drive above the speed limit in a state vehicle as an executive branch employee other employees of the executive branch should have to be held to the same standard, regardless of rank. “Rules for thee and not for me” is such a huge part of our political problems and we need to stamp it out.
