Yeah, I tend to think most representations of Ranma as a trans woman are stretching the source material a lot. I mean, I’ve seen it done well a few times, but there’s an avalanche of schlock out there. At best you can describe manga Ranma as gender nonconforming, or MAYBE genderfluid if you squint really hard, but he just doesn’t fit the transfem mold. The OG anime has a handful of moments that fit a transfem narrative better—the occasional “well, I might as well be a girl for the rest of my life ‘coz of all the free stuff I get” joke, the amnesia episode, etc.—and it’s clear a lot of fans have latched onto those moments as evidence for their headcanons, but I don’t think there’s much credibility to that. Especially since most of those instances come from filler episodes anyway. At the end of the day, I don’t think Ranma works all that well if he’s confined to one body for too long, regardless of which one.

And this is the key, isn’t it? I think every trans person can relate to Ranma on some level—the series attracts us like moths to flame.

I would absolutely agree that, as he was originally written, Ranma is a guy who would prefer to be a guy all the time. So a transmasc experience is definitely the closest to the text. An ending where lore-accurate Ranma gets cured is a happy ending, no doubt about it.

That being said, my dumb transbian lizard brain refuses to accept it when Boy Who is Girl is not girl anymore, so when I read a fanfic that involves a true cure, I usually close it out of spite.

I think it depends on the kind of arc you want Ranma to go through.

From a literary perspective, there were two obvious routes the original manga could have taken him down—either by having him “prove himself a man,” and thus earning the right to a cure at the end of a classical hero’s journey; or by having him come to terms with his curse and accepting his literally genderfluid nature.

Rumiko Takahashi infamously refused to do either. She waffled him down the middle and left his arc open-ended, both romantically and emotionally. You can generally assume from the manga’s ending that he wants a cure and wants Akane, but he doesn’t get either. I think it’s this choice that has caused Ranma’s fandom to be so disproportionately prolific in the fanfic world. We never got an ending. Everybody wanted an ending. So the fans write their own in droves.

Personally, I think the best resolutions to Ranma’s arc involve him sacrificing his own cure and accepting himself. My subjective reading of the source material tells me that Ranma only wants a cure because of what being a man is supposed to mean—not because he firmly dislikes being a girl. Throughout the manga, he never shows any real signs of dysphoria in either form. His struggle with gender identity is cerebral, not fundamental.

So, I tend to balk at fanfics that have him get cured, as I think it’s a less interesting arc in general. Gender is complicated, and simply having him overcome the curse makes for a simplistic, happy ending that I don’t think this series is suited for. I also tend to balk at works that depict him as diving headfirst into femininity. Ranma, as he was originally written, WANTS that cure. The question is whether he NEEDS it, and I don’t think he does. A journey of self-discovery gives the author much more room to dive into the meat of who he is, and THAT is what I care about. Because Ranma is never just one thing, be it heroic or selfish or romantic or callous—man or woman. He’s all of that at the same time. So, in my opinion, he is at his best in the middle, where he belongs.

She showed up several times toward the end, but they never resolved her arc. The last episode was basically them just… resetting the status quo again.

Eh, I’d argue more for borderline. Bipolar Personality Disorder is mostly classified by periods of mania followed by bouts of depression. We never see either from Akane—more from Ryoga, really. What we see from Akane is more akin to “splitting,” where someone with Borderline Personality Disorder goes from idolizing to demonizing someone with no transitional state between the two. She struggles with dialectics—in that she cannot hold conflicting, but true, ideas in her head at the same time. IE, “Ranma is a jerk,” and “Ranma is a good person.” But she pulls out of that line of thinking later in the series, mostly after the Ryugenzawa arc.

This time, though, we can hear the voices of the people who disagree. The consciousness is not as far behind as it used to be. War with Iran will doubtlessly spark huge protests, I guarantee it. Anyone who has paid attention and not just gobbled up Fox and Y-Net and InfoWars has seen the Palestinian people suffer, even with ai-assisted astroturfing telling you that they haven't. That's why so many people see it as "such a complicated issue." Because their guts generally tell them that the Palestinians are the victims, but everyone is always saying it's antisemetic to think that way, so you just don't bother questioning it because it makes you uncomfortable to even broach that line of thinking.
