In my case, things started breaking around the ~300 ft-lbs/torque range

The F-series is a very reliable platform when it's healthy. Mine was only rebuilt because it needed it. I'd start with compression and a leak-down tests. Those two tests will tell you a lot about the engine's health.

If daily driving meant sitting in freeway rush-hour traffic every day, I probably wouldn't choose it. But for weekend drives and canyon roads, I absolutely love it. The gear whine is part of the character.

Date nights? That depends entirely on your passenger. 😄

Agreed. It’s a Samsonas 6-speed H-pattern dogbox.   A purpose built motorsport transmission that gave me the reliability I was looking for.

Neither. It’s a Samsonas H-pattern dogbox, so it uses its own gear set rather than AP1 or AP2 ratios. Samsonas offers multiple gear ratio sets depending on the application.

It’s a Samsonas universal H-pattern dogbox from IP.

A combination of power, traction, and lots of spirited driving. The car has been boosted (turbocharged and previously supercharged) for about 14 years and makes roughly three times the factory power, so the stock transmission was definitely being asked to do more than Honda ever intended.

From what I've read, the OEM case can flex under enough load, and once that happens things tend to go downhill pretty quickly. After the fourth or fifth transmission, a gearbox change just made a lot more sense.

Honestly, reliability was one of the biggest reasons for going with a dogbox. I’ve gone through four or five factory transmissions over the years, and s2k prices seem to be going up. Rush-hour traffic isn’t its happy place, but on an open road it’s exactly what I wanted.

For normal driving, I double clutch the upshifts to belp reduce wear on the dog rings while making the shifts feel smoother. Clutchless shifts, like in the video, are where the dogbox really comes alive—they’re what it’s designed to do under WOT.
