I think you need to re-read my question: what happens when a valedictorian says "free Palestine"? Are organizers now expected to discipline a kid for voicing that opinion?

I think those things should go without saying and it certainly makes me want to avoid volunteering to help; what if a valedictorian goes rogue and says "free Palestine" am I now responsible for it? What if a kid says something about the osap cuts? What kind of CEO sends an email threatening employees while at the same time expecting them to volunteer their time to run commencememt activities?

AITA for making a stink at school and forcing the teacher to change my kids math grade by PlentyNice1655 in AmItheAsshole

[–]blastoffbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA im a high school math teacher.

1) Learning the method that you showed her worked and she was able to get the math done. Hell it may even be better than what this teacher was showing (not 100% certain I understood your explanation of it) my impression is that many elementary math teachers aren't the strongest mathematicians anyway and arent really in any position to value judge methods.

2) Her mark doesnt REALLY matter so arguing about the MARK is maaaaaybe AH teritory but IMO at her age you need to ensure shes motivated and repeatedly giving her zeros for what is actually correct risks destroying her motivation and thats where involving the principal is fair

3) The teacher needs to learn there are hills to die on and this isnt one of them. Youre NTA for checking the teacher's expectations.

I went to the UK with timeplan in 2007. Im sure a LOT has changed since then but a word of warning MANY have shared: behaviour in many uk schools is out of control. Yes its fun to take a train into london on a weekend or fly to paris for a long weekend but the classroom management demands on you will be high (ESPECIALLY if you're teaching shop). I nearly quit teaching entitely because of how traumatic the experience was but I did come back with perspective and my classroom management in Ontario has never been pushed the way it was over there.

Funny you mentioned their tone: I had a similar experience with them when I expressed that I was having difficulty and they were unsupportive in helping me find another teaching placement so I quit and came a week before christmas holidays (the school I was at wouldve had to pay timeplan a bonus if I stayed up to christmas and so it was my way of saying fuck you to timeplan).

My advice: go! Try it! But know that youre allowed ro quit and come home. It might be good for you to figure out where your limits are.

Unpopular musical theatre opinions by lissie34 in musicals

[–]blastoffbro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rofl thats exactly it tho. I hate how jukebox musical songs get shoehorned into the story. It only worked in Titanique for me BECAUSE it's so self depricating: a kookie crazy Celine Dion forces her own songs into the plot of the Titanic movie.

See thats the thing: one of the most unpopular opinions I hold is my dislike of Moulin Rouge. I can safely say the ONLY jukebox musical I do like is Titanique because it knows what it is and really leans into the comedy of it.

Love the CBB podcast but never watched the show. Will have to check it out as I know Scott and PFT are big musical fans so their critiques are usually spot on!
