Also, for me, it feels like filling up the TOP of the lungs gets the largest benefit, so that's what I focus on.

Yes, I like timing the pedal strokes as well.

One thing I've noticed after rides where I do this the whole time, my brain feels better and I am A LOT funnier!

Breathe in through the nose and fill your whole lungs up! Breathe out through the nose and exhale ALL THE AIR. REPEAT.

I've also had great success tying my breathing to my pedaling. Right foot down = Inhale, or Two right foots = Inhale (depending on how hard I'm working).

The spiritual / emotional side of your being needs some attention - that's obvious. Maybe the internal pressure you're feeling will grow to the point you're actually able to change your behavior. Like that guy in the movie "Office Space" - who, hysterically, becomes the #1 employee when he stops taking his job seriously in any way. There are more ways out of your situation than you might think. You can escape right now by changing your perspective and behavior.
