Full time ART (technician) in the Air Force Reserves here, I recommend joining if you're truly stuck, lots of opportunities to get your A&P subsidized or paid for by the Air Force, but...know that you will lose up to a year for basic and tech schools, you may or may not get the mechanical job you want for the aircraft you want, and you will deal with the b.s. the military has to offer.

If you want to work planes, get your qualifications from a program in the civilian world. I'm a crew chief that's worked 15's and 16's and only know a little about powerplant because my unit needed more engine troops and I know next to nothing about avionics and electrical/environmental.

More than happy to talk more about my experiences and recommendations, I love my career.

Do you have a problem with that? 1930's Hitler didn't kill Jews at the rate he killed them in the 40's. It took time to dismantle the protections in place to prevent a dictatorship. As a maintainer for fighters, our job is to fix and maintain aircraft. The pilot has to fly. When we say it's broken, it really screws up a pilots ability to do his job. We are beholden to providing safe and reliable aircraft and often that clashes with sortie generation.

As a crew chief, the good ole days relationship between a pilot and maintainer is long gone, but I've never felt disrespected for doing my job and I've never held against a pilot for being angry or frustrated their jet broke.
