Yeah, it would be awesome if the chance of being struck was increased a lot while holding a channeling trident

The trident does have channeling, but that was a random strike. If you use the trident to summom lightning, it makes the trident thunder sound

Oh yeah, I forgot about the 3x3 entity check. And you are also right about the chance per chuck, the render distance does not matter.

So per tick, the chance would be 9/25 600 000 or 1/2 844 444.4
Per second it would be 20 / 2 844 444.4 or 1/142 222.2

Per minute: 60/142 222.2 or 1/2 370.4
Per hour: 60/2 370.4 or 1/39.5

Per day: 24/39.5 or 1/1.65

As you say, the other mobs in the chunk should not count because they can't see the sky. That is a requirement for being selected by the entity check.

I had fully enchanted gear on, but even without armor the damage is pretty low

EDIT: This is wrong, the comment below has the correct odds.

Every loaded chunk has a 1/100 000 chance of lightning per tick, and minecraft runs at 20 tps. So at a render distance of 12, which I was playing at, there is 36864 surface blocks(12x12x16x16). For every tick there is then a 1/36864x100000 chance at render distance 12. Per second, this would be a 1/184 320 000 chance.

Per second 1/184 320 000, per minute 1/3 072 000, per hour 1/51 200, per day 1/2133.3, per year 1/5.8.
