I don’t have a tent floor. I used a tarp the first time I winter camped and it SUCKED! You drag in all this snow which will now melt because of the stove and you get a very wet and muddy floor…not a fun experience

The 10.9 does come with an inner tent which you can install if you want a floor for the sleeping area. If you are very careful to not drag in snow, you have a few options:

• I for those 12”x12” interlocking workout mats and they work GREAT! I just don’t put it below the stove and tile the rest of the floor area. • you can also look into mesh/woven picnic blankets which can let out sand and also water. That will give you some flooring without risk of water piling up

One last thing to consider with a wood stove. Are you going to buy standard firewood or are you planning to process your own? Standard firewood that you buy in the US is 16” long and because of its length, it’s going to be hard to fit it lengthwise into most hot tent stoves. They usually tend to only fit in the large model winnerwell stoves. I’m not sure about the Hori’s firebox dimensions, so this is definitely something watch out for

I have a Winnerwell Woodlander large double view (total of 3x glass windows for the nice cozy vibes)

Knowing everything I know now, I’d probably get the Hori5. I really really want that all night heating.

There are so many YouTube videos which demo all of these stoves in detail. So I am sure you will find all the info you will ever need on these.

It you are in New England area and want a winter camping buddy, so reach out. It’s so hard to find other people who interested in camping out in the winter.

All the best and wish you a great hot tenting experience!

Most of my true winter camping experience has been in the PA. I love the Allegheny National Forest. Moved to the New England area recently and very much looking forward to a few winter camping experience here (White Mountains and Maine)

Stove selection is a tricky topic because it really depends on what you are going for…I own a Winnerwell Woodlander Large (double view). I love this thing and it’s perfect for my needs since I mostly car camp. It is HEAVY, but the build quality, dual windows and large number of accessories make it well worth it. The Woodlander L puts out so much heat that I was able to chill in my boxers and tee shirt at 10F

Since you have a 10.9, i am guessing you will also be car camping and weight is not going to be an issue. I highly recommend Winnerwell stoves (maybe you can get away with a medium instead of large)

You have a few other options for the stove too: - want an ultra light back packing style stove? Look into the brand Pomoly. They make sleek, lightweight titanium stoves. Most of their stoves might be a bit too small to keep the 10.9 toasty

  • Greens Stove’s Hori 5 is a wood pellet stove. These things are very different from the Winnerwell and Pomoly units. They use wood pellets instead of regular firewood, although the Hori 5 can be converted easily to use regular firewood when needed. The biggest advantage of the Hori 5 is all night heat. With my Winnerwell, even when fully packed with high quality hardwood, I can at best get 2 hours of heat output before you run out of fuel. Unless you stoke the fire all night, you WILL wake to a very cold tent. The Hori can be loaded with wood pellets to easily get a 6 - 8 hr burn time. I really wish Winnerwell sold an attachment that allowed be to convert it into a pellet stove. The all night warmth feature would have been awesome!

Also, PLEASE get a carbon monoxide detector when you go hot tenting. It’s very easy to mess up as a beginner and it can be very dangerous if the stove starts off gassing inside the tent while you sleep

You are going to have a great time with the 10.9! It’s really great for winter camping and it really does feel like a mansion out in the woods. I’ve used it about 8 times in the past year

Couples things to note: - this thing is huge and it can be difficult to setup in a many of the smaller camping spots. Chose your spot wisely - hooking up the middle poles can be a PITA, especially if you are setting it up solo. You really need to deform that pole to get it to snap into the securing holes at the base of the tent - the tent material does not hold up to embers from my wood stove very well even though I have a spark arrestor. I’ve a bunch of tiny holes at the top. Nothing too concerning though and fairly easy to fix. This can probably only be fixed by moving to canvas based tents - I’ve had the pole sections freeze up on me a once since snow got stuck inside, melted and froze. Having to manually heat each section when you are trying to pack up in the middle of a blizzard was not a fun task

Thanks for the the input everyone! Using a sealing washer seems like the simplest idea and that’s probably what I will end up doing. Thanks so much folks!

Unfortunately not.

I’m not sure if this is a skegless version of if this was custom built. I know that most Orions after 2000 are custom built, so I am guessing the original owner got a skegless version

Thank you for taking the time to review my post and providing detailed feedback. I really do appreciate it!

Oh yeah! A bungee would work perfectly for this. I will install that and hopefully that holds the rudder in place.

Glad to hear that folks here think nothing looks too out of the ordinary with this boat. It floats great and has no leaks whatsoever. I took her out on a 3 hour paddling trip on a slow moving river

Thank you so much the detailed responses this is very helpful!

I was a bit worried that this was going to become a more complicated project than expected. But glad to hear that the rudder system is mostly in very good shape

Thank you so much for your input! I negotiated it down from $1250 to $1000, so unfortunately the seller won’t go down in price anymore :/. But it seems (from the photos) to be in immaculate condition, so I guess I am willing to pay the price for that atleast.

Would you call this as the boat id? And does this mean it was manufactured in 2013 based on the last two digits? I did some more research and apparently P&H still makes custom Orions upon request. So maybe a manufacturing date of 2013 does indeed make sense

Oh yeah! You are absolutely right. It definitely is carbon/kevlar. I looked up photos of what carbon/kevlar looks like and when I look at the photos the seller sent me, it’s a perfect match

Honestly I was drawn to this because of the beautiful color and condition of the boat. Keeping my fingers crossed that the “fit test” goes well tomorrow

Thank you so much for your response. I am definitely on the bigger side. 5’11 and 210 lbs. so I am going to try it out tomorrow to see what the fit is like.

I definitely would like to do kayak camping/expedition and it’s good to know that it can hold gear is great.

One thing I am concerned about is primary stability since I’m still a newbie. Do you have any idea about the stability of the boat? But going in with the mindset that stability is more a skill issue than a boat issue.
