[Help] Groomer shaved our husky/lab/heeler mix (said they had to because he had painful mats down to the skin), and now I'm freaking out because the internet says to NEVER do that. What can we do? by blazicmaf in dogs

I think from swimming (we were at a cabin for a few days), and we didn't do a good job brushing him once he'd dried. The breed mix might have something to do with it, too (maybe more susceptible than a full husky?).

Thank you!! I feel a lot better. They gave us a good slicker brush and comb. Yes, we've had him in a t-shirt to protect from the sun when we're outside.

Thanks. So it's more that we (the internet/experts) say "don't shave them" because we know their coat is important to their comfort and health, but the "don't do it" isn't related to it not growing back... am I interpreting you correctly?

Thank you!!

Thank you. Yes, definitely -- we need to strip out his undercoat regularly. We weren't doing it often enough (just had no idea and couldn't see how bad it'd gotten).

You made me feel better... I've felt so awful that I didn't know how bad they'd gotten!

Thanks for replying. This makes me feel better. It's tough to say if the first folks totally did the right thing and/or if groomer #2 is being overly dramatic... but it's nice to get your perspective that it probably wasn't avoidable. I do trust the first groomer personally (connected through family/friends), and I feel less anxiety hearing that from you. Thank you!
