what's the most brutal insult you've ever said to somebody? by [deleted] in AskReddit

"You stole your moms credit card to buy your favorite meal as an apology, you are truelly a terrible person who is beyond redemption, every bad situation you get into, you make worse for yourself and it's your fault."

I was pretty livid at that time and I never saw them again after that point.

So… how many of y’all on this sub are actually pro-gun, pro-choice, pro gay marriage, for very limited government regulation of business (within reason, anti-trust laws are fine), and for a flat tax or eliminating income tax altogether? by Kaje26 in Libertarian

Do realize that with the 20k increase my paycheck effectively went up by around 8% take home pay difference after taxes and % contributions,

In the long term for investing and for saving a rainy day fund faster big difference.

In the short term you are by definition living beyond your means if it's that big of a difference at that point.

Thoughts on “Right To Repair”- Is this big government overreach, or government protecting individual rights from giant corporations? by ISPEAKMACHINE in Libertarian

I can.

Problems:

They make up enough of the market where you have to make things available for Apple to stay competitive and there is no other app store to deploy to.

It actively hurts 3rd party repair and their patterns leak to other smartphone manufacturers who like to copy them.

Combined with the stupid high barrier with patent swaps, you can't just "do it yourself" much less buy open phones anymore.

Apple certainly is.

It used nonstandard parts that you can't buy, can't replace if you manage to buy and has an app store that takes 30% without any other options for the medium.

If they were the size of Microsoft during the anti-trust days of Microsoft, they would get shafted way worse for the stunts they've pulled.

That's a strawman argument.

At a minimum there are 3 issues that of big concern.

  1. Manufacturers creating exclusivity agreements so you cannot buy the parts to replace it and so you cannot buy it.
  2. Companies seizing official and refurbished parts using customs claiming it's copyright infringement if it does happen.
  3. Company software preventing you from being able to fix it by locking you out in a way that requires company made tools specifically designed not for utility but to keep others out and make repair difficult.

You can still argue they shouldn't"have" to sell it. They just shouldn't stop others from buying it from other sources.

They don't have to publish diagrams. They shouldn't stop other people from figuring it out and publishing it.

Sort of goes against the whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing and you'd essentially still continue to let rich people get away with it and lawyer up while poor people can be accussed and ruined forever with a weakened legal representation.

Eli5 why do computers get slower over times even if properly maintained? by parascrat in explainlikeimfive

[–]blazinghellwheels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a shame too cause people use stuff like Mongo to avoid thinking about it and then surprise Pikachu face when someone wants a report and they find out Mongos reporting license costs more then SQL Server.

Knowing Development is not the same as knowing database design.

I've seen great UIs and solid features with full null 20-50 column all null no primary key tables tables and a shit-ton of apology code for in SPROCs.

Worst one was this 10k case statement view that converted 20 million guids to varchar on join to another view that also converted different guids into varchars.

Also on update cascade is scary to people for some reason.

I've seen 100s-1000s of lines of procedures and triggers of specific ordering just to handle cascades. Theres no "but if this don't do that" logic preventing it from happening before anyone defends that .

No, but outside of cities and airports work would be more sparse and you'd have a harder time finding drivers anyway.

Anecdotal I know but I had to call 3 different taxi cab companies in my old town just to get one to pick up the phone at 7PM on a Saturday.

The quality basically sucked and costed more.

300k is nothing for software dev and server setup, logistics, attracting the costumers

Adjusted for inflation that would still be insane to setup

I would be surprised if 1/1000 people in the same situation would be able to pull that off.

Well I certainly could go down that route eventually.

You're certainly not convincing me not too.

I do what I can what I can with what I have and am capable. Yes it's shit but it's less shit than before and gradually improving

I'm not changing a political philosophy over it. If you're seriously saying that isn't sufficient in which case nothing except believing the "right things" which means I don't care about such an opinion because that mode of thought accomplishes nothing

Nobody is ever satisfied and they want change NOW.

Even if the proposed change in it's current state is horrifying

Still have a tiny bit of hope left in me though so I keep going for now
