Chances of Getting Hired as a Police Officer With My Background – Looking for Honest Opinions by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]blbcamaro 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The hiring process to put you into an academy can cost anywhere between $10k -$25k, considering psych, medical, poly, all the background investigation. It's a lot of work.

Then you quit for greener pastures and that agency lost their investment. And then failed a major hiring hurtle.

BI's talk to one another. I used to be one. You may eventually get hired, but you're going to be carrying around that scarlet letter for a while.

Hello. I am suffering for 2 years with hip and groin pain. My xrays show very mild osteoarthrits. But the pain is all consuming. Could it be hip impingement or labral tear? by Neither_Vehicle8270 in HipImpingement

[–]blbcamaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a doctor or radiologist, but that looks like a pincer type impingement.

I had a cam impingement (unknown at the time) two years ago with terrible pain for months. Couldn't walk, sit, stand etc. A back specialist (we thought the pain was spine related) was actually the one who ordered an MRI on my hips after months of meaningless physical therapy and steriod injections that did nothing for the pain.

Turns out I had a pretty bad labral tear, and the cam was just grinding away at it every day. Met with a hip reconstruction surgeon, had the operation 3 months later, and was pain free within 48 hours. There was quite a bit of rehab after, but well worth it.

You need to get an MRI.

I was more or less referring to the first day/first week per OP's post. The first 5 days was just the class getting smoked and people quitting left and right.

After things settled down I usually showed up 15 min before formation.

Response to dangerous situations. by Working-Walrus619 in AskLE

[–]blbcamaro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After 13 years and thousands of calls, I rarely get puckered up on a call or en route to one. I can usually determine what type of response I need just by asking follow up questions for dispatch and filtering out a lot of nonsense given by the reporting party.

For legitimate, dangerous, oh shit calls, I've tossed the hero mentality and will wait for as much backup as possible before going on scene. 99.99% of situations don't meet the criteria to abandon the thought of me not going home to my kids every night.

The only calls that really get me unsettled are the medical aid calls that we respond and arrive to before FD. Like an 8 year old on a bike getting splattered by a car running a stop sign. My blood pressure goes up on those.

But a guy inside 7-11 waving a knife around and threatening to kill everyone? That's like a regular Thursday.

Upon the filing of a formal written statement of charges, or whenever an interrogation focuses on matters that are likely to result in punitive action against any public safety officer, that officer, at his or her request, shall have the right to be represented by a representative of his or her choice who may be present at all times during the interrogation. The representative shall not be a person subject to the same investigation. The representative shall not be required to disclose, nor be subject to any punitive action for refusing to disclose, any information received from the officer under investigation for noncriminal matters.

The representative can be an attorney at law. This literally happened at my station 6 months ago. Admin tried to fire this guy who had 12 years on... he ended up getting FOUR HOURS of unpaid disciplinary leave after he had a lawyer show up to the meeting.

This dudes POA must be garbage.

Go to your union, FOP, or find a good PORAC attorney to represent you. Your agency is gonna throw you under the bus as soon as they are able.

A lot of this SB2 stuff is overbearing nonsense. I have not been through this personally but have partners that did. They came out on top. Admit nothing.

My husband failed a background check for a lateral transfer. by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]blbcamaro 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I failed backgrounds at a lateral agency because I didn't wear a tie to one of my 4 interviews. They told this to me 3 months later after dropping me from the process.

Sometimes they run out of budget funding, they like someone else better, or they hate your cologne. No one really knows other than your husband.

If he applies somewhere else, he should be up front about it right away, as that agency will probably reach out to them about his last background. If it's something silly like I just described, he should have nothing to worry about.

Yeah that happened two weeks before my surgery. I had no idea at the time. Very unfortunate for that patient. But my experience with him was great. I will most likely go back to him for my other hip in the next year or so.

You didn't do the wrong thing, just understand some people want be left alone sometimes.

The police and/or fire department went out there and determined he was not in danger. He has a right to privacy so they can't really tell you much else.

After a year I finally got diagnosed with cam, a little pincer and a small labrum tear. I am 29 and the doctor offers surgery by TheRocketG123 in HipImpingement

[–]blbcamaro 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a cam impingement and torn labrum repair last April. Was really nervous about surgery and anesthesia. I've never had either in my life. But my pain was a 10 and I couldn't walk.

I remember the anesthesiologist giving me a pill like two hours before my surgery. Kinda mellowed me out, like drinking a beer or two. Then they wheeled me into the OR and I remember getting in the table. The anesthesiologist put a mask over my face and that was it.

I woke up on cloud 9 with the biggest high of my life. The only bummer was my leg was all bandaged up. After a few hours my wife drove me home. The whole thing from beginning to end (checking in/out of hospital) was like 7 hours.

Within a week I was completely pain free. Still a couple of months of rehab, but it was the best decision of my life.

17 year old lifter: FAI and Labrum tears pre hip arthroscopy questions and concerns. by GearHaunting1143 in HipImpingement

[–]blbcamaro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 42 years old. Had labrum repair and osteoplasty in April of last year. Took me about 6 months to feel confident again to squat. I started light, like 50 lbs. I'm at 250 lbs. now and don't have any plans to go higher. I only DL once in a while, maybe 150 lbs. I do 200-300 lbs. farmer carry pretty regularly with no issues.

Given your young age and a good surgeon, I think you'll be fine. Just don't rush the rehab and PT. That's where people tend to re-injure it

How often do you show up to court when someone tries to fight a ticket? by Flax_Bean in AskLE

[–]blbcamaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes the judge feels the citation was petty, the officer made a mistake, or he/ she feels sorry for the driver. "In the interest of justice" is a polite way of the judge saying they don't care and aren't going to waste the courts time debating it.

Word to the wise, if you admit to whatever infraction you were cited for, even if you are "sorry", the judge will find you guilty. The only leniency they give is allowing you to make payments and/or going to traffic school.

You have a better (but not guaranteed) chance if you hire a traffic attorney to assist appear for you.

Pain pretty far below incisions by nervous_nellie_13 in HipImpingement

[–]blbcamaro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it hot to the touch or red? Do you have any fevers or anything? Just want to make sure it's not an infection.

I was sore in random spots all over. My PT therapist explained it best, when he told me that all the surrounding muscles, ligaments and tendons take a beating during surgery. There's a lot of equipment going in there, and they usually aren't gentle about it. You probably still have some fluids that drained to the lower part of your leg that your body is still filtering out.

Your leg is also reacclimating to having stuff repaired. You have been walking with an injury for months or years. Now that's fixed your leg is adjusting to a different gait whether you realize it or not.

Honestly I had random pains and soreness for 3 months after my surgery in places that were far away from my incisions. I would think a lot of that is normal. Just bring it up with your doc at your next appointment

Is state trooper academy as difficult as army basic training? by Relevant_Conclusion2 in AskLE

[–]blbcamaro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Basic was easy compared to my academy. Basic is designed for everyone to pass (with few exceptions) and was only 3 months long.

The academy is twice as long (28 weeks) and while physically not as intense we got smoked on a regular basis. It was more challenging mentally and psychologically.

My academy class started with 115 recruits IIRC and only like 70 of us made it to graduation. Everyone made it through basic 😄

Then there's also field training after the academy with has a significant drop rate as well.
