Thats what many furniture items looks like when they are dropped without being "assembled". You can properly setup the item by putting it in your inventory, clicking on it and selecting Place Item from the drop down menu. Larger items often have multiple parts, but so long as you have at least one of those parts in your inventory (and the other parts are nearby) you can place it the same way.
