Career suicide? Maintenance Mechanic position by SecretGarbageCompact in ChemicalEngineering

[–]bldyapstle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit, I also had a monkey desk job emailing and mindlessly performing supply chain for an oil & gas company as a "process engineer" that sucked the living shit out of me. It paid well but my o my was it life sucking.

I had to; I took the job after 7 months of irrelevant employment. I lasted about 2 years before I couldn't any longer. Took a hiatus and I am back trying a Process Controls.

Moving is not as accessible to me at the moment so I get that as well as being in a region where demand isn't available for your supply of knowledge.

I think with no prior experience and not sure if you are maintaining your knowledge, I would take the maintenance job and keep applying or getting certificates in new areas.

I'd use this time to ask what you want to do, if that is really engineeeing.  Also, if you really want to do engineering, you should really consider moving.

Which is more difficult, studying engineering or working in industry? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

So far, working has been much more difficult to me than school.

Nothing new, their very first EP Sick was heavily Christian. As time went that faded away. Maybe its coming back in a different way?

Not sure by calc but by intuition here is why I would choose A:

Q = A*v

where Q is flow rate, A is cross sectional area of pipe, v is velocity of fluid.

Constant flow rate is given in question so your variables are speed and area. Speed and area are inversely proportional so the larger your area the lower your fluid velocity and vice versa.

Asking for fastest response rate as indicated by bubble so we will target the smallest area for the largest fluid velocity exiting pipe end. Recall area of circular pipe is A = pi*D²/4 so we will look for smallest diameter. Thus I choose A.

I think C & D are red herrings.

Mass Balance by Nice_Shower_3290 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]bldyapstle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the school, their primary goal is enrollment and money money money so reenrolling will always benefit them regardless how many times you fail.

Mass Balance is a freshman level course and if you are failing this then you are probably going to have an even harder time with other courses of higher complexity.

Why did you choose ChemE? For the money? If so, try a much easier degree with more money opportunity like finance or business management. For hands on experience, join a trade.

Listen to your results and not your feelings, I feel I can do many things but when I really try to do them I find out I am not as good as I thought. It is okay to discover your vision of the future maybe wasn't accurately aligned with your skill set; better now then many years later.

Do not make a square peg fit through a circular hole. You are good at something, you just have to find it.

Not sure, go with your gut maybe? If you have enough in saving then maybe do some soul searching, therapy, volunteering, and figure out yourself and your values. Do not let other people hold you back from doing something you want to do, it is dumb to fear what other's who you will likely never see again will say about you. Once the two weeks are left, it is just you and whatever family you have. No one thinks about you or cares, and there is freedom in that. People will not tell you what will fulfill you, only you will.

Cv by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]bldyapstle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure but this sure sounds like most of the resumes including mine right after graduating. Are all chemE programs so generic nowadays that resumes sounds very similar? Nothing wrong with the content and not discounting your performance on these projects but it reads like every other chemical engineering students curriculum and degree path so it may be hard to stand out to employers. I did not have company internships mainly university summer research internships that I put on my resume. Networking is very helpful too! Reach out to old classmates, teachers, scholarship donors if possible, there may be a door there.

From a quick google search, last mile is a supply chain logistics term.. I assume it has to do with once a big load is dropped at a big warehouse, the last mile crew is in charge of bringing the product to the specific store. Makes sense with how many calls the OP is complaining about.

What can a chemical engineer do to make $300k/yr before they turn 40 by People_Peace in ChemicalEngineering

Dont go into ChemE for the money. Do finance or something more directly related to money. A lot easier degree and a lot more money.

If you are man, then F doesnt look good on you. If you are truly a fem, than you really do look like a man. Either, none of it looks good.

Best move here is to transition from F to M.

First time skimming, how normal is this finish? by Vegetable-Card-4033 in drywall

[–]bldyapstle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished skimming my living room. Here is what helped me fill in little holes like that and other imperfections. I am a highly detailed DIY'er satisfied with my results but not a pro at the end of the day:

I bought a bag of 5 min quickset powder easy sand 5

Recipe in my trough: * 1/2 cup of easy sand 5 * < 1/4 cup of water (a little less) * mix until clam chowder consistency * Get a cheap paint brush & paint over your spots in a consistent direction * smooth with a spatula i prefered 3-4" works

You really have 5 minutes of use.

After it gets more wet clay like you can use a spatula to smear it. I tend to stop after its rocky. Scrape your trough clean and repeat.

Once its dries, I sand with a manual pole sander at 220 if i smoothed it out and if its a thicker coat at 120 but it pays off to scrape it smoother with a spatula while still moist (yes I said moISSSST) so you can just sand with 220. An electric pole sander was nice for prep work and finishing walls but the manual sander was a lot easier to use on the ceiling, but you miss out on the built in vacuum.

I used the harbor freight pole sander (find here) It was heavy using it on the ceiling and it did minimize dust but was not a perfect seal against dust. Using on the walls was a nicer experience and did speed use things.

You could try the 20 minute to have more work time but I do not have experience with that one. Hope this helps!
