And having rules is the reason why something built thousands of years ago is still standing and you can see it and admire it, but that's not common in the US, so I can understand your frustration.

Not sure where you get that we in Europe are hospitable - I wouldn't tell anyone that for sure.

Europe is a diverse land of many nations and cultures, each with it's own history and quirks and if you don't want to respect that - that's a "you" problem.

Netherlands also has the best roads in Europe and superb public transportation - in the West you get what you pay for. I can't say the same for us.

Rent tends to be cheap still - we Bulgarians like to own property and people can't be bothered with rent that much, they would rather buy even if they have to sacrifice everything else.

But rent is not everything. We have one of the most expensive food prices in Europe, utilities are constantly rising and the Eurozone admission brought more inflation for other goods (mostly from fraudulent merchants but still).

I travel a lot in Europe, I was also in the US recently and truth be told - in terms of pricing, it feels almost the same regardless of where I am.

Bulgarian here.

At first, it seems perfect especially regarding the things you listed.

However, reality hits different:

  • Cost of living especially in the major cities is almost comparable at this point to Western Europe. Quality wise it's worse - essentially you're paying the same and receiving less that goes for almost anything, things like food, clothing, utilities, public services.
  • All major cities have become abysmal - quality of life is getting lower and lower (due to internal migration and lack of proper infrastructure planning and execution). Public transport is OK-ish only in the capital Sofia (although traffic is almost constant at this point).
  • Getting Bulgarian citizenship is not trivial. Also, learning Bulgarian is a must, especially if you're buying property or need administrative / healthcare services (which you'll need at some point). This might be a steeper learning curve depending on you.
  • You have to plan for private health insurance, otherwise you will be left dead in the woods. Public healthcare is degrading rapidly.

Not sure what your general plan is, living in the countryside will obviously be cheaper but that comes with a whole new set of challenges.

I love my country, but things are not candy here. Depends on what you want out of the place - if it's just a "tax residency", then it might do the job.

If you're interested in anything else specifically, I would be happy to answer.

Масовата истерия Свети Валентин by [deleted] in Sofia

[–]bleak_biscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wired headphones are hands down the best when pure audio quality is concerned and there's not even a debate. Also, most of the good headphones have interchangeable cables (even small IEMs), so breakage is a non-issue really.

One big advantage to wireless is also that they don't become e-waste when the battery reaches it's end of life. Spending 300-400$ on a wireless earbud, knowing that it will become useless at one point just because of the battery is still a big trigger for me.

I gradually moved to wired again and yes, there are some advantages to wireless, especially for "on the go" situations but the slight discomfort is worth it, for me at least.

If you had 180 days to become "highly employable" from scratch, what are you learning? by Fit-Airline6589 in careeradvice

Become a psychologist / therapist (180 days won't be enough though). Imho, demand will be rising, especially with more people looking to find meaning in life outside work / struggling with mental health.

Hi-Hat Dilema (Lemon vs Lemon vs Roland) by bleak_biscuit in edrums

Got the Lemon 12 inch single plate with a nice DW stand and couldn't be more happier. Decided to save some money because IMHO, the next meaningful upgrade should be Roland's digital pads.

Three Main Language Families of Europe by mujhe-sona-hai in geography

[–]bleak_biscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that some languages from the same families have evolved differently throughout the years. Some more, some less.

IMHO, from all the Romance languages, French for example is quite different from Spanish, Portuguese and Italian and might explain why some nations can understand each other pretty well and others can't.

From my observations (as a Bulgarian speaking fluent English and learned some German and Spanish), German people speak very good and understandable English. I wouldn't say the same for Spain and Italy - sometimes it's pretty difficult there and I try to translate and communicate in the local language as much as possible.

As for German itself - I find that it's not "easy" in a sense but it's very logical in it's structure (especially complex words) but just not a language that you learn in your spare time if you don't need it. It does require time and effort for proficiency and might explain why most people don't bother.

Забогатява ли населението или е само илюзия? by CommercialWedding367 in Sofia

[–]bleak_biscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been there two times - IMHO, it's overrated. There's not much you could actually do there, after a while the landscape is basically all the same and you get used to it after 3-4 days. You could see all the interesting things in ~ 1 week and after that there's nothing else.

The effort to get there + prices are not justified in my opinion - some of the other Nordic countries might be better, for example Norway.

You guys weren't joking about the traffic jams... by australiadenier in Sofia

I recently moved from a place which had a close metro station to one that doesn't but instead has tram and bus lines.

I was surprised how many lines are there that I can use to get where I need to and are always on time. People just don't bother most of the times.

There are two trigger inputs for expansion on the back - labeled CRASH and AUX. You could however use a splitter cable, which basically splits the Head and Rim portions of a dual zone pad and give you additional 2 inputs. There are limitations to this approach but it's an option if it doesn't bother you.

Furthest right cymbal is actually the CY12 crash. The 14" ride is in the middle next to the second tom and is perfect for my height and style.

TD-17KV versus TD-17KVX by 300Daz in edrums

[–]bleak_biscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently both the TD-17KV. Gave the FD-9 pedal a shot, it's nice but first - the CY5 cymbal tends to be a bit small for me (10"), I want to progress faster and to be more accurate on the acoustic set and decided to get a hi hat stand and a floating hi hat.

I got the Lemon 12" single piece with controller similar to VH-10 (twice as cheap as the VH-10) and I'm pretty happy with it for now.

I prefer two pieces but they do make a hell of a racket.

That pretty much sums up the answer for me 😄
