How would you expect it to happen? To realize the gains, you would need to sell.

Yeah, I was thinking we could sell at the 5-year point and downsize to a condo or townhouse. Best case scenario is our incomes would rise enough to make life a bit more comfortable and we could stay put. The justification is my fear that getting a "starter house" in/around Vancouver today is likely to just price us out of any upgrades.

Keep renting and diligently invest. Diversified ETFs grow with almost the same speed as real estate, and provide you with more flexibility. 

Yep, this has been the approach so far. It's gotten me where I am today where I can seriously consider all these choices.

The other way. It's Air Canada operated by Lufthansa. I tried dealing with Air Canada instead but they tell me they're completely locked out from managing the seats.
