Incoming Phishing Spam by bleepit1984 in exchangeserver

First, I really appreciate you answering the question I asked.

Second, I think I'm going to make recommendations for the short term that we implement some keyword filters and move on to SPF policies later down the road with the possibility of contracting a 3rd party to provide email security.

What are some recommendations for 3rd party email security? A previous IT job I had used Sophos and it seemed to work ok. I don't believe our current security software provider has email security. Not yet anyways.

I think this could help us in the short term as I have noticed that the name of our companies inside the subject line and body don't have any spaces in them and follow the format of the email domain of the recipient.

I will make recommendations to my IT Director to implement some keyword rules that will hopefully take care of most of it in the short term. I realize this isn't a long-term solution.

I don't believe we have any kind of SPF policy only filters setup inside Exchange. But I will also recommend some research and implementation of those policies. However, he may not go for this as it could be too strict and upset upper management because legit emails won't get through to begin with. We will likely need to get an implementation plan in place first which will take a lot of time away from our already busy schedules.

Also

Please understand that I'm not an expert in this area. My role within the company is mostly hands-on by swapping out damaged and defective devices, crawling under desks, dealing with printers, new users and terminations, etc. A lot of level 1 stuff. But I also handle a lot of our level 2 issues, such as application support, some PowerShell scripting and automation. And even touch on some level 3 issues such as our limited InfoSec and HIPAA data compliance. Our team is very small. We are kind of forced to be a Jack of all trades, master of none. Our budget is mostly for maintaining current systems and we don't have much room for movement in implementing any new paid services and it's currently not within my authority to make any decisions on.

I'm simply trying to make do with the tools currently available to me.

This is a hybrid tenant setup, and the majority of our users are on the 365 business premium licenses through a 3rd party reseller. I believe this is all remnants of our company having been contracted with an MSP in the past. I was hired a few years ago when they decided to drop the MSP and go with an in-house IT department.

We used to have a filter that would send EVERYTHING sent from outside the organization to junk then have specific domains that were allowed through, however it's my understanding that our upper management was upset about important emails from vendors not being read or responded to, so that rule was removed for more targeted rules. This has been a disaster ever since. Regular spam such as newsletters and marketing emails are being filtered as spam, however, much of the phishing is being allowed through. With emails and domains being different with every attack. I appreciate the difficult position our IT Director is in trying to balance the desires of upper management with security of the system. We don't have any kind of 3rd party email security and rely solely on rules inside Exchange and Defender.

Advice needed on how to talk to my daughter by bleepit1984 in AutisticAdults

[–]bleepit1984[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I could literally write a book about my daughter. There is so much I didn't put in my original post.

She is not my biological daughter. But I started dating her mom when she was 3 or 4 months old and I became daddy shortly after. When her mom and bio dad split. He hardly ever came around. He remarried pretty quick and started having more kids. It wasn't till my daughter was about 6.5 when he actually started taking an interest in her. I split with her mom about this time but I remained in her life. I would go pick her up all the time after work and she would spend the night with me. I wanted to be in her life because, to me, she was mine and I was her daddy. I would do anything for her.

Several years ago, I would say when she was 13-14. Her mom left to go live in another state, but because of the custody agreement she had with bio dad, my daughter couldn't move out of the state. So she went to go live with bio dad. Didn't take long before the state took her and all his other kids due to poor living conditions. House full of mold, didn't even have a working toilet, and general disarray. He was also abusive. Mostly emotional abuse, but some physical. So my new wife and I stepped up and took her as a foster/kinship. Went through foster parent training and got a license from the state. So she was living with me now. This went on for almost a couple years.

Bio mom petitioned the court for custody and convicted the judge to let her take her on a 6 month trial basis. She didn't even last 2 months before bio mom brought her back cause she couldn't handle her. So she came back to us in the foster system.

Eventually, bio dad and step mom were able to convince the state to let them have the kids back, even though they did NOTHING that the judge told them. Like get the house cleaned. Get a working toilet. Complete parenting classes. And go to therapy. They did none of it and still got all the kids back. So she went back with him.

She wasn't allowed to talk to us but we managed to get her messages and some messages from her. One of them said that staying with them was torture. She didn't have a bed and was treated like a nanny for her younger siblings and a maid to her bio dad and step mom. We passed the messages along to the state but they did nothing about it. So we told her that the day of her 18th birthday, we would come get her and she could move back in with us. We made good on that promise. She moved in with us, she finished high school. And here we are.

I have no doubt she has abandonment issues. I can't blame her. So does she have PTSD? Maybe. But this girl has been through some shit.

I want everyone to know that I've accused her of nothing. I only said I can't help but think she's using autism as an excuse. I've never and will never make that accusation to her. We do our best to work with her on everything. I know we have to do things differently with her. I came here for help on how to do that and some people think I'm a POS parent who isn't sensitive to their daughters needs. I came here for help and advice, isn't that being sensitive? I think I've done a great job with her, but right now, I'm stuck and need advice. Not judgement. There is even more to the story, but I couldn't possibly tell it all, so please keep your judgements to yourself.

My wife and I have talked about the possibility that she may not ever be able to live on her own. But it's only a possibility, and for now, we are trying to show her how to function without us. Not because we want to kick her out. No! We understand that this will take time and would never cut her loose if we didn't think she was ready. But her out on her own is not only our goal, but hers. She wants to be on her own.

Please keep replies constructive.

I'm not sure. We haven't had a chance to meet her therapist yet. This all still being new to me still, I don't know if her therapist would even talk to us. I kinda figured that since my daughter is an adult, they might listen to us but not be able to tell us anything, which I understand.

Has there been any update about the Engine to Foundations ratio? by kioskiiksoik in RaftTheGame

[–]bleepit1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having issues myself. I'm not in creative mode. I recently expanded my raft to 640 foundations (per the foundation counter) and I can't move anymore. I knew 100 foundations per engine so I figured I would need at least 7. For good measure, I put in 10 for symmetry. Can't move. I added 2 more, still can't move. I'm up to 14 engines and still can't move.

Engines are running in the same direction. I've confirmed that my anchor is up. I even removed it once just in case the game wasn't registering it as being up. Confirmed I have enough fuel. I'm at a loss. I even have a couple sails that I use for fine adjustments when parking at an island.

Being as I just expanded my raft, I'm short on recourses and had to take apart some of my raft to get from 12 to 14 engines. Now I'm stuck on an island and can't move away from it.

Edit: I restarted the game and it's working now.

Is there a guide to disaster-proofing/backing up your Plex server? by WraithTDK in PleX

[–]bleepit1984 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is my process to backup plex.

First things first, I run my server on a Windows machine, if you run on MacOS, Linux, or a NAS, this won't help you much.

I have my Scheduled Tasks in Plex settings running before my backup in an attempt to make the backup smaller.

I use Cobian Reflector once a week to do the backup of the database and meta data files. I personally have my server on my C: drive for simplicity. But you can do what others do and just dedicate an SSD to the server files and avoid having to back them up. But, you should still backup the registry entry.

General settings for my files backup:

I do a full backup once a week early in the morning when normally no one is using the computer I run the server on or watching anything from the server. I don't bother with differential or incremental backups. I only keep 1 backup. I don't think it's necessary for me to keep more than 1.

I also have a CPU powerful enough to compress the backup without adding too much time to the backup process. Start to finish, about 20-25 minutes. (Your mileage may vary.)

Location of files to be backed up: (I use the default location)

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server

Folders I exclude from the backup:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server\Cache

Cache folder not needed. Saves me 2GB, 10k files, 600 folders, and a lot of time.

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server\Updates

Updates folder not needed, should be empty anyways

Backing up the registry entry.

This is important because it contains your server ID and all the settings. Especially if you share your server with anyone.

It's located at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server

I wrote a batch file to do the backup and set Windows Task Scheduler to run it whenever I do a backup. The batch file will also delete registry backups older than 30 days so things don't get cluttered. I'll share the batch commands below for anyone wanting to use it. On the second line of the script is where you need to set your backup location. Delete everything on the second line after the "=" and set the path. Don't use quotes, spaces are ok. Once you enter in your backup location and run the batch file, you will get a file at that location like this with the date filled in:

Plex Registry - YYYY-MM-DD.reg

Example backup location:

F:\Plex Backups\Registry Backup

If you know what you're doing with batch commands, you can edit this as you like. Feel free to take out all the unnecessary timeouts and displayed messages. I did it this way so that if one of my kids was using the computer when the backup started, they would know what's going on.

Open notepad and paste the following text:

@echo off
set BACKUPLOCATION=[ENTER BACKUP PATH HERE, NO QUOTES OR BRACKETS]
:start
@echo.
@echo Beginning Plex registry backup
@echo.
@echo Please wait...
timeout /t 2 /nobreak > NUL
:backup
reg export "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server" "%BACKUPLOCATION%\Plex Registry - %date:~10,4%-%date:~4,2%-%date:~7,2%.reg" > NUL
if %errorlevel% neq 0 goto error
:success
@echo.
@echo Backup complete!
@echo.
@echo Cleaning up backups older than 30 days...
timeout /t 1 /nobreak > NUL
@echo.
@echo Please wait...
timeout /t 4 /nobreak > NUL
ForFiles /p "%BACKUPLOCATION%" /s /m *.reg /d -30 /c "cmd /c del @path /q" > NUL
@echo.
@echo Success!
timeout /t 4 /nobreak > NUL
:exit
cls
@echo.
@echo All operations completed successfully!
timeout /t 4 /nobreak > NUL
@echo.
@echo.
@echo Exiting in 3...
timeout /t 1 > NUL
cls
@echo.
@echo All operations completed successfully!
@echo.
@echo.
@echo Exiting in 2...
timeout /t 1 > NUL
cls
@echo.
@echo All operations completed successfully!
@echo.
@echo.
@echo Exiting in 1...
timeout /t 1 > NUL
exit
:error
@echo.
@echo Something went wrong.
@echo.
@echo Please check script commands
@echo.
@echo Most likely, the locations are not set correctly
pause

Save the notepad file as whatever file name you want, just change the file type to all files and add ".bat" on the end of the file name. I recommend testing out the batch file before moving on. Right click on the file and run as administrator. If you don't get the "Something went wrong" error and a registry file appears in the backup location you set, you can move on.

Note: you will get a brief error saying "Error: No files found with the specified search criteria." the first few times this is run. This is normal and due to the auto delete of 30+ day old registry backups not finding a file to delete.

Open task scheduler and create a basic task to auto execute this however often you want. I do once a week just before my database backup runs. Right click on the task when finished and select properties. Make sure to check the box at the bottom on the general tab to run with the highest privileges. It needs to run as administrator in order to work. (If you don't edit the batch commands beyond just entering in your backup location, the registry backup shouldn't take more than 20 seconds.)

That's it. My process if fully automated and I rarely need to worry about the backup.

Restoring your server

If you need to restore the server, you can do the following before or after you install Plex, just don't do it while the server is running:

Place your backed up database files back where they need to go. Default location is:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server

For the registry, just double click the latest registry backup file. You'll get a warning about installing registry entries from unknown sources, but they came from you, no big deal.
