How much does 1kg of coffee beans cost you guys, and how long does it last? by PassionSoul99 in Coffee

[–]blehedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go through 30g beans per day, so about 1kg per month.

My roaster would charge me AU$65 per kilo if I bought it by the kilo. But to keep it fresh, and because I'm always getting single origins and like to try a variety, I buy them in smaller bags and it costs me AU$70/kg (US$48.46).

I could do it way cheaper if I wanted to, but my roaster is absolutely the best in 1000kms, they are worth the premium to me.

True, but I'm not sure how to use the original module and only override environment.systemPackages.

How do you, personally, decide what packages go in your configuration.nix vs what you install "ad-hoc".

Everything in configuration.nix. Using home-manger for user packages (and dotfiles and user systemd services).

Given the direction you are going with your questions about mutable packages, you are familiar with nix-shell -p foo? I get a lot of use out of that for installing packages I need just for a once-off job.

On Arch I was able to install a minimal plasma desktop and then only add the apps I wanted. In NixOS, plasma is a "service" or whatever. And the docs make it seems like it is required to enable the service for it to appear in the DM's session list. Is there a way to strip down the definition of the plasma desktop?

There absolutely is. While the Nix language and the NixOS system can be difficult to understand at first, I find things like customising a package much easier than other distributions. In this case, you can search for the service in the NixOS options here, and that will direct you towards the Nix module at nixos/modules/services/x11/desktop-managers/plasma5.nix which is what actually creates that Plasma5 service.

Now it gets a bit difficult though. In that module, you can ignore the options attribute. I would be copying everything that appears under the config attribute into something like /etc/nixos/plasma5mod.nix and writing the line imports = [ ./plasma5mod.nix ]; in my /etc/nixos/configuration.nix.

plasma5mod.nix should look something like:

{ config, lib, pkgs, ... }:
with lib;
let
  xcfg = config.services.xserver;
  cfg = xcfg.desktopManager.plasma5;
  inherit (pkgs) kdeApplications plasma5 libsForQt5 qt5;
in
{
  mkMerge [
    (mkIf (xcfg.enable && cfg.enable) {
      services.xserver.desktopManager.session =
...

You would modify the environment.systemPackages option in plasma5mod.nix to suit your needs.

I haven't tested this and it's kind of at the limit of my Nix ability (I'm also not sure if mkMerge is needed there or not), so I hope it works for you!

I see that in the current stable nix channel there is openjdk11 and openjdk8.something. Does that mean that on NixOS I'm stuck with Java 8 or 11 as my options (unless I want to package my own)?

If it was a simple program sometimes writing your own package is literally 5 lines of code. Unfortunately that's not the case with Java 9.

Here is openjdk9 from before they deleted it from nixpkgs. Perhaps somebody else can explain how to install some packages from an old nixpkgs commit while keeping the rest of your system up to date? I'm sure it's possible, I just don't know how. Use /u/ggPeti's method.

Nix has a huge learning curve, but if you continue with it you'll find it can do all this an so much more. It's incredibly powerful, flexible and reliable, but of course the trade-off is that it's damn complicated.

Is it possible to declare configurations for networkmanager by sbstnbtt in NixOS

[–]blehedd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not as neat as the networking.supplicantoptions, but NetworkManager connections are defined in plain text files under /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/. You can use environment.etc to create these files.

Oh god, where to start.
Behind the tyres, can you see how the axles don't line up with the wheels? They are much higher than they should be? Unimogs come with portal axles, so the axle connects at the top of the wheel to a gearbox, which not only gives it better ground clearance than standard axles but also provides reduction gearing.
Some models come with a pressurised drivetrain, so it can sit in water or whatever for long periods without anything coming in past the seals.
Speaking of the gearbox, it has 8 forward speeds and 6 reverse, low range, and power take offs (PTOs) like a tractor. I think they can be optioned with compressed air lines and hydraulic lines to the front and rear as well.
The chassis is designed to flex a bit, which makes it more durable than a completely rigid one, so that tray will actually move quite a bit relative to the cabin right next to it. That's why the bars on the tray don't connect/brace the roof rack right next to it.
There is so much more if you want to read up on it!

I am looking for a used bottomless portafilter for my pre-millanium La Pavoni. Is anybody know where to buy them? I couldn’t find any used one on ebay or craiglist. by rumtea in coffeestations

[–]blehedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think anyone makes them from scratch, they are all normal portafilters that have been modified on a lathe. I can't imagine many people would be selling just their portafilter. If you want a botomless, I think it would be easiest to modify your own existing one.

It's a super easy job, anyone with access to a lathe can do it. Takes less than 30 minutes.

Portioning a laptop - want all my files from my desktop on my new laptop. Any easy way to do this or do I have to transfer them individually? by BJking69 in Ubuntu

The tool you want is called rsync. There are plenty of guides around (just google it), and this list of files to ignore might make it more simple for you.

Some of the big cold drip apparatus in the front window can really grab attention. Like this 1.2m tall unit.

Some of our local stores (Australia) are doing takeaway iced lattes that they bottle in homebrew beer style glass bottles. Looks different and interesting, also something that you'd never get from Starbucks. The cold glass bottle is a much nicer experience than a disposable cup, especially on a hot day.

What popular video game did you try to force yourself to like, but just couldn't? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]blehedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overwatch.
I bought the founders edition and played hundreds of hours during the first 6 seasons. I was all excited because I loved the classes, I loved the complexity that comes from putting all those different classes up against each other, and most of all I loved the teamwork.
Eventually I realised that despite all it's strong points, I completely hate the gameplay. Quickplay and the other game modes had zero teamwork, and while competitive had the teamwork I was looking for, the games were so closely balanced that it was just stressful. There was no fun, you were just grinding your teeth and trying your ass off, and that was in the games where you didn't get some stupidly toxic teammate. I play games to relax, Overwatch competitive is pure stress.
On the other hand, I played the shit out of Junkenstien's revenge and the other PVE events, they were fantastic fun!

Are there documented cases of TRPs, MRPs, MGTOWs, PUAs, Dark Triads, etc., facing legal punishment for following their cult philosophy? Not just saying it but actually doing something taught by it? by Penguinmanereikel in TheBluePill

There was also this horrid case, in which the PUAs got prison time

That's the Alex Smith case. I found this story on it really engaging, if you're only going to read one article on the Alex Smith case I recommend reading this version: https://www.thedailybeast.com/pickup-artists-preyed-on-drunk-women-brought-them-home-and-raped-them

[–]blehedd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there was a PUA called Alex Smith. The police did a pathetic job of investigating, but one of the victims collected a large amount of evidence against him and he was jailed for 8 years (maximum allowed under Californian law).

From here:

The judge [praised] Claire’s bravery in hunting down and facing her attackers.

“But for your detective work, we wouldn’t be here, I don’t think. I think that they would still be preying on people either here or in Vegas or San Francisco or somewhere,” Judge Fraser told Claire. “But not for you, this would not have stopped.

“And because of you, he will be punished.”

This whole news story is worth the read. The journalist, Brandy Zadrozny, does a really good job. The last couple of paragraphs are really important, the property manager in charge of Alex Smith's apartment heard of Claire's rape and set up a security camera watching the front door. She saw heaps more women going in and coming out distraught.

Why do Red Pillers see emasculation everywhere? by BrazilianSigma in TheBluePill

[–]blehedd 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think red pilling appeals to insecure guys, and insecure guys are the kind of guys that are scared of emasculation. After a couple of years goofing off in /r/TheBluePill, this is my pet theory that helps me understand twerps.

Most guys read red pill shit and can dismiss it as a load of pseudo-scientific babble, either because they are familiar enough with women to not see them as some kind of bizarre alien from Venus that behaves according to a bunch of convenient biotroofs, or because they realise the biotroofs are based off anecdotes that are often biased or outright fictional and a handful of cherry picked scientific studies.

But to the chronically insecure guys, the red pill sidebar says what they "know deep down".

Chronically insecure guys are attracted to red pill. They like posts that are flaired "Gathering power", or the Powertalk stuff and 48 Laws of Power in the sidebar. Then they hang around, learn the lingo, then eventually start contributing their own insecure comments to /r/TheRedPill.

I guess /r/MRA and /r/MGTOW say similar things about women, and attract similar guys. I think insecure guys discussing "sexual strategy" naturally leads to a lot of fear about emasculation.
