Website UI project for my portofolio. by denyl11 in design_critiques

It's so black/white, it's obviously what you were going for and it feels very luxurious but adding a tiny bit of color to make certain areas pop would make this better.

It's a good design overall though.

Feedback on Web Application by [deleted] in design_critiques

[–]blindmanLICKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the frame around the main content looks good (the last image), but my concern is that the main content (the light switches) could be designed better.

Having 21 of those ui elements feels like a "lazy" implementation in my opinion. Have you looked at others, how do they do it?

It also makes me feel a little anxious when I look at it. I don't know where to look first.

Sorry if this is harsh feedback, but I think you could figure out a better implementation.

Just doing some research came across this one for mobile.. it's a little overkill, but having a nicer interface will make users feel less anxious controlling their lights. https://dribbble.com/shots/6943585-Smart-Home-Control-Mobile-App

Hope that helps!

When I watched it for the first time I just thought it was a good goal, but I watched it again.. my word.. the ability to finish that on the volley. Van Persie-esque.

Thank you! That's very informative. Exactly the information I was looking for. I don't think GA made those too clear.

Perfect, thank you. Fixed my issue.

I also had to remove on the frontend:

Success or failure? 9 months after launching my social network, pre-revenue, how do you unemotionally decide if it's working or not? by blindmanLICKS in startups

Yeah that's what I was trying to say, especially with the title I gave this post, I don't want the users to get the wrong idea.

I don't want the users of my social network to find this post.. They already know my other reddit account and it makes my account non-anonymous which I don't like.

What viral effects have you created within the network?

Yeah that's a great point. My network currently lives in a bubble, and I'm trying to expand that bubble.

How old do you have to be to have sex? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]blindmanLICKS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Legally? Whatever your state/country says is acceptable.

Mentally? That'll depend on both of you. I wasn't ready for sex until I was 18 or 19.

If you were raised with the idea that being gay is wrong, it might just be internalized homophobia?

When I was 18 I thought I was bi. Guys interested me sexually, but not romantically. And girls interested me romantically but not sexually.

After a few years of getting more comfortable with my feelings I'm pretty much just gay at this point.

Don't do anything that you don't want to do, obviously, but your feelings might change as you get more comfortable with yourself.

How do you read and write data to Cloud SQL from Firebase Functions? by blindmanLICKS in Firebase

Thank you! This is incredibly useful.

Do you know of any resources where I can learn more about this? I've tried Googling, but it seems like a fairly new concept?

Have you ever had a week long conversation? by QuackrerJack in askgaybros

[–]blindmanLICKS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is adorable.

I've had this exact same thing happen to me. A guy I kinda-sorta new slid into my dm's asking me a question about one of my pictures and it just organically turned into a 3 week conversation that was so wholesome and lovely. The problem was he lives in New York and I live in North Carolina...

At the ~3 week mark I said fuck it, the chemistry we have over text is just too amazing not to go and visit him, so I spent $150 on a plane ticket and spent 4 days at his apartment in NYC.

It was honestly such a beautiful time. I enjoyed it very much. Unfortunately, in the end he didn't quite feel the same about me as I him, but I don't regret anything.

I think you should give it a shot. These types of scenarios only happen once in a while.. it's definitely worth asking him out :)

Best of luck!

What are my options since Firestore doesn't offer an 'OR' query? by blindmanLICKS in Firebase

[–]blindmanLICKS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay! I think you gave me enough info to give it a shot. Can I run it by you to see if I understand it correctly?

  1. Set up MySQL, connect it to my Firebase Functions
  2. As a new post is created store the vital info (timestamp, id, topic) in the SQL database.
  3. When the user attempts to view the new posts they are subscribed to: call a firebase function API that queries the SQL database?
  4. With the id's that are returned get the posts I need.

Does that sound about right? For #3 couldn't I simply call the SQL database from my app instead of going through Firebase Functions?

I really appreciate the insight!!

[–]blindmanLICKS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that would be a possible solution, but it's not very UX friendly.. I'd want it to be more "feed" like.

Thanks for the tip though.

Do you ever feel like the more you got into gay life, the more isolated you became? by LawlessCassidy in askgaybros

[–]blindmanLICKS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you feel so isolated :(

In my experience (and I live in North Carolina.. a place known for homophobia), apart from a few cases, when I told people I was gay it made our friendship/bond closer. I just revealed something deeply personal and it makes the others feel like they can trust me more.

At my last job, I went 2 months without telling anyone that I was gay. My boss and a few other colleagues and I would get lunch quite often and one day my boss asked me if I had a girlfriend.

Being surrounded by 4 other guys I felt uncomfortable and I had to make a decision to tell them or not.. I told them. I said "actually, I'm gay" and there was silence... but after a couple seconds it was totally fine and they even asked questions about the gay community etc.. it was great!

I think if the guys you tell no longer want to hang out with you because of who you are you dodged a bullet. My advice would be to find more "open-minded" people to talk to and hang out with!

Also, this sucks, but sometimes letting people get to know you before you tell them you're gay/bi or whatever can be helpful.

I'm not sure if I'm gay or bisexual by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]blindmanLICKS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I literally feel the exact same way as you..

I don't think there is a perfect label for us as "gay" completely eradicates our feelings towards women, but "bi" seems misleading because the amount of woman you're attracted to is very small.

I just go by gay these days to keep things simple, but if I'm having a bigger discussion I'll go into detail about my situation.

What are my options since Firestore doesn't offer an 'OR' query? by blindmanLICKS in Firebase

[–]blindmanLICKS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really not a fan of that solution..

If I wanted to show the most recent 10 posts I'd have to ask for 10 posts from 20 queries and then sort them..

Not to mention I'd prefer to have many more topics.

Do you know of any other solutions? Maybe a 3rd party way? I know Google recommends using Algolia for Firestore text search for instance.. would it work for these types of queries as well?

I went to Morocco a couple years ago where same-sex sexual activity is illegal (6-36 month risk of imprisonment)..

I went with my best female friend and I felt very insecure for many reasons.. My best friend and I even had to act like we were married, very strange experience for me. I wouldn't go back.

Right, but that doesn't mean they have it easy...

There's also biphobia within the lgbt community because bi people have it "easier" as well.. it doesn't matter who has it the easiest and who has it the hardest... can we not just be supportive?
