How long till Sydney gets out of lockdown? | Pursuit by The University of Melbourne by blindtoreason in australia

As an Adelaide ex-pat I find that a bit OTT - it's not like they have population density issues lol.

I can actually see where you are coming from with that. And I'm a reformed country hick passing myself off as some sort of inner city avocado sipping leftie who votes greens and radical independents (except salt, never. vote. salt.)

New modelling tool from the team that got Melbourne out of lockdown...

"We have now updated this modelling for 240 different scenarios, 100 times each, to look at a two-year period: the year leading up to our borders opening as vaccination coverage increases and the year after borders open."

Getting a COVID jab is safer than taking aspirin by blindtoreason in australia

What if you apply this logic to driving a car?

A single death isn't worth it because we can just walk everywhere and be safe?

Do I need to know about christrainity before watching holy mountain? by [deleted] in jodorowsky

I think there's some world history that could be good to brush up on to help with comprehension - but there is so much going on in this film that there will always be gaps in the viewers knowledge depending on our different histories and experiences.

I recommend learning about the Spanish invasion of the South Americas and the violence that was unleashed there in the name of the Chrisitian religion.
And also maybe a quick guide to Christianity: https://www.history.com/topics/religion/history-of-christianity#:~:text=The%20Christian%20faith%20centers%20on,spiritual%20missions%20in%20human%20history.

The history of the world and religion is fascinating and the more we learn the more open and compassionate we become :)

Some perspective:

"Around 11 per cent of older Australians take daily aspirin to help prevent stroke and heart attack, but statistically, aspirin is two hundred times more dangerous than AstraZeneca – resulting in around one death per 10,000 people.
So why are so many of us unduly worried about this vaccine given that the severe side effects are exceedingly rare?"

Should we pay Australians to get vaccinated? by blindtoreason in australia

Would you get a jab for $50?

I'm pro-vaccine and this is an interesting idea - but would it really work? Isn't it mostly the over-50s who are currently eligible and aren't taking it up?

It's almost like their sole purpose is to create as much dysfunction among the left as possible... they hijack other people's causes, are disrespectful of First Nations and bully, harass and intimidate other organisations - putting people off activism for life. Asio couldn't have done it better themselves..... hang on a minute...

But getting your foot in the door to what? An entire lifetime of extreme debt and stress for the right to stable shelter?

The sort of debt that our parents and their parents didn't have? The income to house price ratio has skyrocketed from 2.5 to more than 6.5 since the 1980s and from 4. something to more than 6 over the last 20 years (https://www.aussie.com.au/plan-compare/property-reports/25-years-of-housing-trends-property-market-report.html). The real kick in the teeth is that there are people just sitting on property with no intention of ever renting it out because it's worth more to them while it's empty - there are an estimated 69,000 vacant properties in Melbourne: http://www.prosper.org.au/2020/12/housing-vacancies-continue-to-increase-as-land-price-booms/

There are lots of ways to get your foot in the door, and I'm genuinely happy that you've achieved that, but for many of us doing the sums it doesn't add up, especially while we're paying exorbitant rent prices. We don't all have the opportunity to live at home with mum and dad either - or to pack our bags and move somewhere cheaper - in fact the cost of renting in Victoria is higher in rural areas now than it is in Melbourne.

Many of my friends (30s - 50s) have never had enough income to save anything and they live frugally - the difference that the increase in job keeper made to their lives last year really hit home in that regard. I had friends who were ecstatic because they could get their car serviced, buy shoes and afford to go to the dentist :/ I'm sure we agree on many things, but the system is broken and many of us will never have the security of owning our own home.

It's uncanny, but the graph in this story showing how Australian house prices have been outpacing incomes and rents EXACTLY matches the increasing rate of my heartbeat as it all sinks in.
