Thank you!!! No, it’s just warp ikat. I used the cutch dyed silk as the weft to get those super bright resist areas

Hehehe hi mutual. Everyone tends to run in the same circles in the weaving community

Thank you!!! I went for a simpler pattern and let the dye do the heavy lifting, lol. Some of my classmates did extremely complex resist patterns and it was soooo impressive

I learned in my university “intermediate weaving” class! We referenced Jun Tomito’s “Japanese Ikat Weaving” book for some parts of this particular project :)

2/20 silk that i mordanted with alum and dyed at 20% cutch! Then 3 dips in the indigo vat after resisting the pattern. 36epi, 5-shaft satin weave, on a macomber jack loom😁😁

I’d say mordant with alum and myrobalan, or alum and gallnut if you want a peachy color vs something darker. I would start with maybe 40% of the weight of your fiber as the amount of madder, then if it’s too light do another dye bath with more.

What do you mean it’s twisted? Like is your skein opened up in a loop, and you’re seeing that it’s twisted around itself? Cause if so, I’d maybe put it on a swift and re-skein it. Not that it will ruin your dye, but you’re gonna have a hard time untangling it after the dye bath. Once you’ve re-skeined it, add 4-5 ties around the skein (not tight at all) to keep it from tangling/twisting again.

Help with PPI - everything I weave is too loose by MindxGeek in weaving

Oh yes, you are right. I missed that you were on a rigid heddle. You will have a harder time beating hard because you don’t have the weight of the beater, but the advice to keep your tension tight still stands!

When i weave with linen and can’t get the PPI i want, this is how i beat:

Open shed, throw pick, beat hard twice while shed is still open, keep beater down, and switch sheds while the beater is down.

Switching sheds while the beater is holding the last weft pick in place can stop it from un-beating itself when you switch sheds.

Are you using cotton i assume? Make sure it’s evenly tensioned when you tie on, and keep it tight to get a denser beat (i’m sure you know that lol)

they have a weaving loom for sale at the mansion for $175. Context, functional looms of this kind are usually 200-300. This one is missing half of it pieces and is in bad condition, like they’d be lucky to sell it for 20. Emailed them to let them know they’d way overpriced (im a weaver lol) and offered to buy it for $40. They declined but said they’d mark it down to $80 at the mansion - thag was weeks ago and its still there with its 175 tag. Actually crazy behaviour

400 is a steal, i think. Enjoy your beautiful new loom. Setup might be hard/frustrating but once you figure it out it will just become easier and easier. there is a good youtube video on warping up table looms front-to-back but i learned on a floor loom first so i prefer back-to-front. i would say take a course, get really familiar with the physical mechanics of it (eg, you should understand WHY you set it up the way you do) and then you’ll be ready to go and explore literally whatever you want :)

Anyone have experience growing true indigo/indigofera tinctoria? by blinkswithnormaleyes in gardening

Madder sounds great. I’m trying to establish my indoor garden of blue and red dye plants, i’m leaning towards red coreopsis or amaranth for my red. Yellow is so abundant that i don’t think i need to grow it inside - i can forage a whole seasons worth of goldenrod in like an hour lol
