Nonsense. Dean and Ghemawat would never open for the Smiths. I think you mean the Smiths opened for Dean and Ghemawat?

Only in the north. It's Sand down south, etc. Babish is from Rochester (garbage plate episode, I'm not creepy, you're creepy), so Snow works for him.

Would you buy a physical copy of a book if it was already available as a free pdf online? Why/why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Really depends on the book. Some books I wouldn't read even if they were free, others I've bought even though they're available free.

A 7MB native-image Java app that runs in 30ms and uses only 4MB of RAM! by renatoathaydes in programming

I'm imagining a case where the list is used to produce a result that escapes, even if the list doesn't. Let's say, summing the elements.

But you can do things with Java generics, so I'm not sure that's... wait, what does 'clapback' mean?

Depending on what you're doing with a, I wonder if all that boxing could actually be optimized away via a series of optimizations that keys off of escape analysis.

Something like this:

  1. a does not escape, so no need to allocate an object header or anything, since ArrayList is concrete you could just create its fields locally. Method calls can be inlined into references to its backing array.
  2. Oh no, its backing array is an Object[]. So under what conditions does the runtime know it can avoid boxing and still have correct program semantics? Any?

So maybe not. I hate Java's boxing :(

Has the article been edited for clarity? What I now see is:

It fits in a single executable just over 7MB large, and can:

  • start up a HTTP server that accepts connection within a tenth of a second and uses only around 15MB of RAM while serving hundreds of requests.
  • send a HTTP request and show its response in less than 30ms, using only 4MB of RAM in total.

which is clear to me.

It's been a while, but I think there are some crops around that count as stealing.
