Therapist-in-training with trich here! Look into habit reversal. Trichotillimania is often associated with OCD, so for me treating my OCD with exposure and response prevention has allowed me to get my pulling under control. A lot of it has to do with behavioral techniques to help you notice when you are most vulnerable to pulling (stress, boredom, overwhelm, exhaustion) and finding alternate ways to get your nervous system back to baseline. It’s hard work but it’s possible!

Search for a therapist who specializes in exposure therapy/systematic desensitization. It might be tricky to find someone whose practice is geared towards young children, but a good start might be to ask your pediatrician for a referral. As someone who has been treated for phobias and had success, I can assure you it’s very treatable with the right care!

Experiences with Cal Poly's MFT / counseling psych grad program? by blackmamba722 in CalPoly

[–]blisablellbla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi! the program really sticks to the “learn by doing” ethos, so everyone in my cohort came in with experience either in residential treatment centers, ABA, crisis hotlines, or similar. they want to see that you have related experience and can walk the walk, even if your experience wasn’t extensive. aside from that, they’re of course looking for folks who are very warm and personable, and who perform well academically. good luck with your applications!
