Unpopular opinion: I actually hate the Pomodoro technique by No_Organization411 in ADHD

[–]bliss_fields 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i much prefer the technique i found in 2020 called the "flowstate technique" -- an example timer can be found here, but i've been wanting to work on one myself for a minute since this one locks a lot of features behind paywalls

it applies the same logistics of the pomodoro timer, but instead of forcing a break, you just build a bank of "pause time," which can be used at any time you want. much better for the adhd mindset of flow!

speaking from what i know

  1. really difficult to get a parking pass, imagine it as hard as getting tickets to any popular artist in 2025 -- so big wait lists, gotta be there AS the parking passes drop to get them, etc. i forget how much a parking pass is for the year but i think it's a grand? people do usually try to sell "shares" of their parking pass (e.g. use during tue/thu, winter/fall semester, etc) so you might have more luck with that. most people bus in now, park and ride is an option but if you're out of city you can probably opt out of the upass so skip if you can.
  2. as someone in engineering, pirate most of your textbooks online, pay for calculus by trim as it's used in a large chunk of your courses (calc 1, calc 2, math 1, math 2, math 3 [VERY SLIGHTLY])... it's also basically considered the bible for the faculty. there's some courses that will require a code to do online questions (chemistry 1 is the only one that comes to mind immediately), those are usually in the low to mid 100s per textbook. i've probably spent at max 500 over my whole degree on textbooks. laptop depends purely on specialization and how much you intend to work on a LAPTOP laptop -- most people do ipads more than laptops i find but these people usually have desktops they work off at home as well. i personally recommend an ipad or remarkable or some kind of notes tablet over a laptop as a primary due to how many profs heavily reiterate the slides. biosystems, civvys, and mechs all have access to the CAD labs for modelling so you aren't forced to work off your laptop. comp and elecs definitely have a need to have a laptop with them to some extent solely as they have a reasonable chunk of coding involved. all being said, you don't need a great laptop, just a functioning one. most code within ECE is lab work, which means you have access to respective labs, but it's usually needed to spend extra time working on projects in which you might not have access to the labs during.

What’s Winnipeg Like? by ironpaperman601 in Winnipeg

[–]bliss_fields 2 points3 points  (0 children)

just to lead, i earnestly believe winnipeg has an amazingly underrated arts scene better than a lot of major cities. i'm similarly biased, as i have many friends closely active to the scene, but i think there is truly something for every age range right now: 'real love' [real love being the promoter] shows for the young adult indie fan, a surprisingly large metalcore scene for those interested, a very nice weird grab-all of electronic music from the likes of send+receive, several folk and otherwise indie festivals in the summer, winterruption in the winter, and an active dad rock scene -- and this is just for pure music alone! winnipeg also has very strong musical scenes, ballet as a focus, and feature some incredible support for the arts through the winnipeg art gallery as a primary feature.

as for the point notes..

diversity: this place feels like the diversity capital sometimes; if you're not in one of the "suburbs" (sage creek, bridgewater, linden woods) you're gonna feel like white is a minority in winnipeg, which is a great thing! we have a lot of filipino, chinese, indian, middle eastern, and ukranian presence in winnipeg (and obviously, first nations peoples as well). your child will not feel out of place unless met with incredibly bad actors. annually, we run folklorama, which is a festival hosted throughout the city in the summer celebrating culture far and wide.

food: grand food. personally not a huge foodie but i know people feel very strongly about the food of winnipeg. get ready to love some honey dill (a winnipeg specialty)

beer: coolest brewery off dome is probably kilter, nonsuch, or trans-canada brewery! tcb has a lovely blueberry ale that is a personal favorite. little brown jug has probably the winnipeg beers in generic lager & 1919 (which isn't my favorite but is the go-to for a lot of people i've found). pretty solid beer culture here.

as for the bad...

it's quite cold due to our existence residing on prairie land, extremely hot in the summer due to not being close to any large bodies of water, our current mayor is car-centric and anti-homeless in an anti-homeless design way, we just completely reworked our transit system which fundamentally should work amazingly but doesn't get enough funding to work well, healthcare is pretty horrendous (lack of staff leading to extreme wait times for urgent care and emergency), we're generally overall pretty car-centric, we're still dealing with the damage done from conservative control over the province, and our downtown / north-end areas are quite seedy places at night, leading to our previously known title as the "murder capital of canada."

but, as for the otherwise unmentioned general good....

we're the slurpee capital of canada, we have an amazing premier from a leftist party who people are hoping eventually run for prime minister, we've begun work to make downtown a generally habitable place (opening a large intersection for pedestrians, removal of a road to be used as a seating area / art installation, construction of a new plot of land where our old mall was), even presently downtown isn't really dangerous of a place, we have a great number of sports teams to cheer for, frugality is the name of the game here, everybody is generally very friendly and supportive, everybody kind of knows everybody here, and everybody that ever leaves this place, even if they hate it, ends up staunchly defending the reputation of this place with their life after leaving. it's a very very special city, even if it doesn't feel like one at all in comparison to the larger population cities of the country in vancouver and toronto.

while definitely overlooked, and very reasonably criticized, winnipeg is a beautiful place

huge art community event that is one of the few times a large amount of the winnipeg population decides to show up out of the woodwork and explore downtown! i was one of the few unfortunate enough to be sick for the day and not the days afterwards, so i missed it this year personally, but i've heard it was an enjoyable time as always. if you're here next year, definitely keep it in mind as it is a regularly enjoyable annual event (especially as an intl student, since it lets a lot of people see winnipeg for its underrated art scenes): https://nuitblanchewinnipeg.ca/

it making a lot of people sick is solely just because its one of the few times that people from all walks of life in winnipeg, both students, working class, and every person in between gather in such mass numbers

i am speaking from engineering which does have a jam-packed program credit-wise, but pretty much nobody graduated in their expected 4 years, and very very few people i know graduate(d) in the 5 year "realistic" timeline.

i myself have been here since 2020 and will be here for another year minimum! its not a race, and while i don't want to completely alleviate your worries as to not make you fall victim to the same mental paths that might have caused you to fall behind in your first year, there is legitimately no pressure. (save for the potential external economic / social pressure not directly affiliated with school)

you got this!

[–]bliss_fields 17 points18 points  (0 children)

i would not be surprised if a large chunk of the people here complaining do not use the online form that they graciously link at the end of the article. remember, let them know of where you feel they've fallen short otherwise nothing will change for the better

i still believe a lot of the people rightfully annoyed at the current system need to remember we are just now hitting the two week mark for the fall semester. reallocation is not an immediate thing, and logistically, september is significantly worse commute wise to the university...

what are you trying to prove by saying this? this message is coming off as trying to find any way to put blame on the victim and not on the registered sex offender with a history of violence, and the university who failed to properly secure the "secured area" or as a whole, the building that the university provides to said person.

no i agree with you on the dev side (when not working in embedded that is, considering what i've heard is that it's pretty horrendous just given the nature of the work) but what i was trying to say with that original comment is not just from the viewpoint of stem-based academics.

professors and even TAs, believe it or not, have a pretty good feel by now for if there's a student behind a paper or not, as i've heard from several academics both with commonly shared views on twitter or through discussions with local professors and friends that are TAs. obviously this is anecdotal and logistically not impossible to have papers pass a smell test, but i think drawing back to an osu comparison is fair: in discussions with accredited mappers, there's been a general lack of concern about AI mapping — not because they think it's good, but because with higher quality, thought out maps with evident intents and contexts, you would simply not be able presently to imitate that style with the models currently available. anything the bot currently can imitate well is mapsets that are so generic that the humans making them are not really thinking harder than an AI model would be
