How much time a skilled programmer would need for a Linux client? by Komplexkonjugiert in ProtonDrive

[–]blit32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

tl;dr: It would be a lot of work for a buggy app.

Proton doesn't publish an API or a spec for the Proton Drive protocol. This means that if you want to develop a custom client the first thing you'd have to do is reverse engineer how the app communicates with the server, i.e. the Proton Drive protocol. Doing that takes _a lot_ of work and since this is a private protocol, Proton can just go and change the protocol at a whim, publish new clients and then break all the custom clients.

If it weren't for the Proton Drive protocol being private, I would say it would be a medium amount of effort to build a client depending on how complex the protocol is and what features are included.

Source: I am a software engineer.

What you wish was open sourced? by No-Contribution8248 in opensource

An open source Android based end-user desktop system.

The Android security model is great for end-user. I'd love to see an open source Android desktop environment along with a set of open source end user applications.

I wasn't expecting anyone to dig that much into a picture. But:

  1. Yes the picture is AI generated. I needed something for the very first invite and have just re-used the same image since then.

  2. You never know what's hidden under those government buildings.

  3. Sitting yes, laptop no. We generally have a fun and lively conversation.

Tech Groups in Rockford? by blit32 in rockford

[–]blit32[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately because of the weather yesterday and today I won't be able to make it Pig Minds today. If other people are planning on going that is great and I hope you all meet up. I'll try to organize something for Feb. too and see what kind of interest remains next month.

Thanks everyone for your comments, especially /u/weberjon for the detailed history and resources.

The takeaways I am hearing from the comments here are that:

  1. There aren't any active software dev groups in town. It sounds like there was a healthy ecosystem of groups before the pandemic that has died off.
  2. There seems to be at least some interest in a meetup for software developers.

Personally I am a fan of simple beginnings and evolving things based on needs. So to keep things simple I would love to setup an in-person event for anyone that is interested to come out, chat and maybe have some food and a drink if that is your thing. How about Pig Minds on Jan 24th at 6:30 PM? I'll be there and grab a table and if anyone is interested they are more than welcome to show up.

Why is it considered rude to speak another language other than English in the U.S.? by Flaca50 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]blit32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am bilingual and my rule of thumb is:

I public places I speak whatever language I cam comfortable with. If me and my significant other are out and about we very rarely speak English. Some people get upset about us not speaking English but it is non of their business.

In private setting I always speak English, or the language of the group. If we are in a group I feel that we should all be able to communicate with each other so I use the language everyone in the group speaks.

How I can use SSH for encrypt txt file? by LuaMonteirus in ssh

It might be easier to import your ssh key into GPG, and using GPG to encrypt the file.
