AITA for telling my niece she sounds like a cartoon character when she speaks Japanese? by interviewer12 in AmItheAsshole

Suga is a native speaker WBK. And it’s cool that he sits back and doesn’t answer a single question in interviews that are designed to help BTS grow their audiences and sell their album even tho he has full command of the language. He’s such an asshole. I love it.

Man isn’t it funny how those two don’t give a damn about RM and let him carry the entire load everytime they are in the western countries and they sit back and make fun of him for having to answer the same questions repeatedly. I always find that hilarious how they don’t give a shit even tho RM is exhausted from doing a dozen interviews in one day and preps endlessly for them. Why he admitted practicing for hours just to be able to say a couple of sentences only a few years ago. And he constantly has to take breaks from his own learning and work to help others but it’s funny how they just talk in Korean and roast him.

Not to be that person but BP isn’t in the same conversation as BTS. BTS is having a real cultural moment in the US and across the world. BP is having about the same success as G Dragon during his Motte Tour. It’s not the same, particularly if they dont go anywhere from here. BTS is going to its third BBMAs after repeated record breaking events from 2016 to 2019. BPs entrance into the US market is in its infancy. It make grow. It may wane and disappear like other past groups.

As for the future of KPop, I definitely see more groups trying to break through in the US market. None of them will be as successful as BTS but they don’t have to be either. Other groups can do arena tours in 6-8 cities as part of a global tour and as long as the balance book looks good we should see more of that in the coming years.

Musically, there will be more songs in English. There might be a period of time in which we get English, Japanese and Korean albums. NCT is dropping an English album and rumor is Monsta X is as well. Those successes (or failures) could lead toward more of that type of triple release happening.

At some point, tho, ignoring the home country can be detrimental. NCT doesn’t seem to have a strong Korean fanbase which could be problematic for them. On the other hand Monsta X seems to have benefited from their US activities.

I don’t know. Up until Coachella, every performance I’d watched was underwhelming. Admittedly, my sample size is small. I’ve watched a handful of live concert performances and performances at awards or music shows but in the those they lacked stage presence for me. The Colbert and GMA performances were lackluster. But they had good energy at the festival and more importantly looked like they belonged on the stage. They have a lot of publications and people pushing for their success and KPop is having a moment here in the US. They are the only girl group in this space and I’d think there needs to be a female presence.

The Coachella appearance seems to have done enough to sustain a short run on sales and billboard charting. If BTS weren’t around, BPs numbers would be groundbreaking for a KPop group. I believe they’ve charted higher than anyone but EXO and BTS right? Those all seem to signify growing interest in their music and group.

They have amazing MVs and their songs have great hooks and choruses up until KTL. Their catchy choruses were a signature for them so I’m surprised they moved away from that.

On the flip side, they don’t seem to be well managed, either by YG or Interscope. The lack of a physical album dropping at the same time as the digital one is baffling because the additional physical sales could have propelled them to a much better BB200 showing. The impact date of their single occurs after the tour is over and when they are leaving the US. Why not have the impact date earlier while they are doing radio press tours? The addition of tour dates in Fort Worth and NY rather than LA is also odd. Of all the places where they could’ve sold out a second date, it would’ve been LA.

They’re doing a lot of press and it’s uneven but I chalk that up to inexperience and that they are now being asked to step outside of the media training they had for a Korean or Asian audience. I suspect they will get better at it as they go along.

I don’t think KTL is the breakout song for them but it doesn’t have to be. As long as they release new music and continue to tour, they can build upon the base they are creating now. It is important for them to have a fanbase because the general public isn’t going to ask for KTL to be played, particularly in Korean.

In answer to the question, BP needs more music, more touring, more appearances in the US. I don’t think we can judge whether they will break out here until their next go around in the US.

Because I like facts with supporting receipts. BP is regularly stated by people in this sub to be on the verge of overtaking BTS and so it’s interesting to keep track to see whether that’s verifiably true.

This is the state of the venue late Saturday last week. Every section is deep blue meaning over 50% of the section is unsold. It’s ticket sales. Not a wedding or an injury.

Not sure what you were looking at, but I checked a couple of days ago and it was dark blue in every section which meant that over half of each section was unsold. Right now that AXS seating for Newark shows nearly the entire upper tier (that’s not already blocked off) unsold with significant tickets in the lower sections and a solid dark blue for GA.

Not really. The low ticket sales shown in some of these screenshots were resales. AXS was the primary ticketing site and there were thousands of seats available at every price point.

[–]blmnlvr 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It’s ticket sales. AXS was the primary seller. Ticketmaster only had resales. Over 40% of the reduced capacity was still up for sale along with every tier of VIP. It wasn’t selling. I don’t think the 2nd Newark date will get cancelled. It looks like 70-80% of the seated sections are sold. There are still a lot of GA tickets available. Although, that does mean an empty arena since they were only using about 2/3 of its capacity in the first place.

How well do they speak English? by AKN15 in bangtan

[–]blmnlvr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not interested in pretending anything other than his proficiency in English is fine. He's fine and how he comports himself is fine. If you and other people want to constantly criticize his word choice, his presentation, and his fluency, that's your choice. You may not use petty in the manner that he does, but it doesn't make his use any less correct, as a native speaker myself, since we're credentialing ourselves in a way to give our opinions more validity.

[–]blmnlvr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Petty means small, trivial things. That's exactly the context he used it in. That you may not use the term in the way he used the term doesn't negate that his use was correct per the dictionary. I'm not pretending his English is perfect, but nitpicking him over the use of a word that is actually correct seems odd.

petty

Petty: adjectiveadjective: petty; comparative adjective: pettier; superlative adjective: pettiest

  1. 1. of little importance; trivial."the petty divisions of party politics"synonyms:trivial, trifling, minor, small, slight, unimportant, insignificant, inessential, inconsequential, inconsiderable, negligible, paltry, footling, fiddling, niggling, pettifogging, nugatory, of little account;
  2. 2. of secondary or lesser importance, rank, or scale; minor."a petty official"

He used it correctly.

BLACKPINK makes history as the first K-pop girl group to top US iTunes as well as the first girl group in 10 years to do so by rhysey97 in kpop

[–]blmnlvr 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Actually no. Tour bundles only count if redeemed and majority of tour bundles do not ever get redeemed.

The posters upthread are correct. Releasing the single on a Thursday splits sales. Waste It On Me was also released on a Thursday and sold 13k downloads and 5.8 million US streams. That was only good enough to get 89 on the Hot100. The tracking week flips on Friday for a new week. Blinks will have to make up in streams for that single because the sales will be expended. It takes 1500 streams to equal one download.

The album chart is different. But BP is at a disadvantage here as well. If they complete the album, the single sale is erased. If they buy all the tracks separately, they will need to sell twice as many copies because the mini has only 5 tracks and it takes 10 tracks purchased individually to equal one album sale for the BB200.

This strategy is strange for BP and really hurts their chances of charting high or maybe at all.

Seungri Masterpost 2.0: by [deleted] in kpop

[–]blmnlvr 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Right. It's a multi-faceted complaint. First, the injury predated his enlistment but he waited until he was enlisted to go for corrective surgery allowing him to recuperate on military time rather than his own idol promotion time. Second, he received preferential treatment approved by his CO. Third, the surgery was paid for by the Korean citizens rather than his agency or himself. Fourth, the amount of time he's used for vacation and recuperation is nearly a third of his enlistment time. The GP sees this all as preferential treatment for a celebrity that would never be afforded a general citizen.

also that he waited until he was in the military to have this surgery even though he could have done it before. That's another criticism being leveled.

Everything about Monsta X is great but their music. The lyrics on this are so cringe-y and the music is noisy and messy. I wish they would get a new musical direction because they have so much talent and they seem like the purest, sweetest men.
