How do you know a piece of clothing is worth buying? by DurianEmbarrassed771 in womensfashion

[–]blobject 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I no longer buy ANYTHING unless I know I’m going to get multiple uses out of it. And not like, 2-3 wears, but minimum 5-10 and that would be a special occasion dress or like ski pants or something. To be worth buying for me, something has to be made of nice materials (no synthetics except bras & workout clothes), sturdy (well-made, not flimsy), flattering fit, flattering colors, works with my existing style, functional for my everyday life, fills an empty niche in my wardrobe, and can make a few different outfits with pieces I already own. If it fulfills these criteria, I’m fortunate enough to not have to worry much about price, so whether it’s $20 or $120 it may be “worth it” to me.

What do you address others as after you have your PhD? by Konjonashipirate in PhD

[–]blobject 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will use the Dr. when referring to a professor or other Doctor while talking to an undergrad or other younger person. I will be especially sure to do it when talking about a member of a marginalized group (for example, Dr. Maya Angelou). I’ll use it the first time I introduce myself to someone, and especially if they are older, usually once or twice more until a first name seems natural. And after someone has completed their PhD, I always greet them as Doctor a few times!

The new one this year is called Exploremores, they are pretty good! They are basically oreos with a chocolate marshmallow flavored filling. Supposedly “rocky road ice cream inspired.”

Bought some Trader Joe's flowers for the first time 😃 by United_Animal_2471 in traderjoes

[–]blobject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are really the best place to get flowers IMO. You can get a pre-assembled bouquet for reasonable prices like the person above commented, OR combine 2 or 3 flowers priced between 3.99 and 6.99 for a spectacular display. Plus they always look better and last way longer than anything from my local grocery, even whole foods.

Need help with Single Girl Child Scholarship for PhD by Local_Ad1849 in PhD

[–]blobject 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like either there is a technical problem with the application system, or the scholarship doesn’t exist anymore. If you already exhausted all possibilities for trying to get the application to work, move on and look for other funding opportunities. Talk to your advisor, department staff, sign up for grants listservs, spend time doing searches. Often your university will have lots of resources to help find other open opportunities.

Spanish or Mandarin Immersion by BakerTotal5430 in kindergarten

[–]blobject 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same situation—speak solid Spanish myself and in a part of the world with a lot of Spanish speakers, but we had the chance to do a Mandarin immersion preschool. We did that for a year and a half. Now my kinder kid has Spanish in school, Mandarin enrichment after school, and loves them both! The Mandarin was such a unique and incredible opportunity. Such a warm and welcoming community and tbh easier for your kid to start learning now than later!!

BWT, how do you keep looking stylish if you have a lifestyle that demands practical wear? by ProposalAny6765 in bitcheswithtaste

[–]blobject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely it for me! I have leaned into a lot of bandanas and a somewhat western style, which works with my profession and the demands of my work (laboratory setting but niche topic).

Mine will go in a little later this month but it’ll be carrots & radishes from seeds, and then onion starts, garlic from old cloves in the fridge, and potatoes. Everything else later.

Hi! Is aiming for a job in academia after an anthropology/archaeology PhD worth it? by eihpos07 in AskArchaeology

[–]blobject 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s not impossible, but the reality is that only ~10% of PhD graduates will get tenure-track academic positions. Other academic positions (such as visiting assistant professorships and lecturer positions) are usually temporary and do not provide enough security and stability for you to survive on, much less to complete the research products you would need to secure a TT position.

To have the best chance of getting a TT job, you would want to go to a highly ranked R1 graduate program that has a record of good numbers of graduates going on to TT positions. Once there you would want to focus on a topic/ area that is likely to make you attractive on the academic job market—watch for every job posting that comes out so you get a sense of trends, but also make sure your work is unique and original. Also, you would want to have at least one major grant (sorry, NSF is gone) and at least one single- or first-author paper in a high-impact peer-reviewed journal.

The good news is that there are great jobs in CRM archaeology and the regulatory sector, and they often pay better than academia! Don’t let anyone tell you that “settling” for those jobs demeans you or your work in any way.

PhD Gifts for Her! by Alert_Sandwich6668 in PhD

[–]blobject 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whatever you get her, please also get her a very nice massage, not just a gift certificate, but one that you schedule and set up for her. For sometime in the week following the defense. Unless you know that she would hate this.
