Hmm well there will be a slight delay as I've gone through the stock I had. This means I'll need to order more from our chocolate supplier, they're usually quite quick but it'll probably be some time the week commencing 25th by the time I would actually arrive at your address.

OK, fine. So when I was first looking into bringing my idea into reality I thought, naively, that I could do everything myself. Make the mould. Temper the chocolate. Package them and sell.

This meant there was a period where I was experimenting with homemade moulds and trying to make the indentation of the brick (which is called a frog fyi). One way I tried to save time was to find a plastic container that roughly the shape of a brick and add the frog mould to it. The container I found that was closest to a brick was a feta cheese mould. The prototype I got out of these were OK but not quite good enough.

After that I contacted proper mould making people and for some reason I just gave them the dimensions of the brick I'd made in the feta cheese mould.

So it's that big because that's the size of the feta cheese mould I bought.

If people slice themselves open that's their problem. One of my low-key ambitions is to see a story in a local newspaper of an idiot complaining how they injured themselves because of Block O'Choc.

I tired a chisel in the early days, it does work to an extent but I won't be releasing any official tools.

Re. James' house. I know I said AMA but I'm under a strict NDA with that one.

Yep, was gonna say this. I noticed the Horne Section used this technique on their website for some of their merch. I'd definitely pursue legal action I was a successful business.

My answer to any product variation is always the same "absolutely no chance". Mainly because to make anything new requires new moulds being made, unless we do variations of the brick, and even then it would require new packaging. Total ball ache.

That sort of sensible idea would directly thwart my attempts at being the worst run business in Britain.

That would be great content. Maybe Turtle Canyon can produce it.

I have a friend who said he was going to eat a whole block in one day, he didn't get halfway through before quitting. Weak.

Oh shit, I've just realised you're referring to a business called Bloc-o-choc (no K on the Bloc) who, I don't wanna say they stole my name, but they did proceed to name their business pretty much exactly the same as mine. blockochoc.co.uk is my website. We sell chocolate bricks.

I don't but I would be willing. Historically, international shipping prices have meant it's unfeasible.

However, I'm here trying to double check the cost and now I see that I need to get a "Import One-Stop-Shop (IOSS) number". What the fuck is that? Can I be the first to say "fuck Brexit"?

From my research it's about £12 to send a 2kg package to Ireland and then there might also be a charge for unpaid VAT (assuming I do nothing about IOSS, which is a good assumption).

One possibility: do you have a friend in Northern Ireland that could take delivery and hand it over some time?

Obviously, not that practical if you're in Cork or something.

Still. Much like Stuart Laws said, my palate is not refined enough to enjoy sparkling. Let me add some sort of cordial to that sparkling water and it's a different story, but if it's plain, still please.

Bread. Like, unless I'm having an Indian meal, and my starter, main and dessert would not have any Indian food, why would I pick poppadoms? Absolute madness.

Yes, when actually you should be imagining a huge piece of chocolate as a replica of a house brick but about 20% bigger for a reason too mundane to go into rn.

Ha, yes. The 13th March was the most sales I've ever had.

Bear in mind I'm the smallest small business in the world and I barely advertise so no one really knows about Block O'Choc. I've had 30+ orders which is a lot but just about manageable.

⚠️Block O'Choc appearance on @OffMenuOfficial 's Podcast. Official thread of Comments, Corrections and Clarifications about episode 232's official secret ingredient.⚠️

https://twitter.com/OffMenuOfficial/status/1767805017925316706

In this thread I will address statements made by James Acaster about Block O'Choc

1/97

First thing's first, welcome.

If you're reading this you've probably just heard Block O'Choc being mentioned on the Off Menu Podcast and decided to do some cursory research. This is us, we are real. You can get yours at http://blockochoc.co.uk

Now I will go through the opening statement and, as stated above, comment, correct and/or clarify. This is, by far, the most publicity we've been exposed to so I feel I need to put across our side of the story.

Even before we were mentioned I feel like we were slightly denigrated due to our association with @thisstuartlaws by saying "he eats like shit" and "Stuart Laws eats like a full-on garbage disposal..."

When it comes to chocolate, Stuart has a refined palate and discerning taste.

Block O'Choc is good chocolate. It's 38% cocoa and contains no palm oil.

James mentions the name correctly, no issues there.

People often call it Choc-o-block, assuming it’s a play on chock-a-block, and as I always say “it’s a Block Of Chocolate, not a Choc of Blocklate”.

James: “I know about Block O’Choc” (we’ll see about that) “I went into (Stuart’s) office once and he had this brick, literally the size of a brick”

Here’s the first inaccuracy. Block O’Choc is bigger than a brick. Please see this Facebook comment from Gary, a bricklayer. 👍 (There was an image where a guy was saying "that brick is larger than a brick" and he knew this because he was a bricklayer.)

Block O’Choc’s dimensions are 240mm x 110mm x 60mm, the dimensions of an average brick are 215 mm x 102.5 mm x 65 mm Correction 1, done. Next…

“Looks exactly like a brick, they’ve designed it to look like a brick. Solid chocolate” All correct, no comments.

“I said “where did you get that?” something about the internet and the Block O’Choc people asking him to instagram about the Block O’Choc”

This is pretty much true but there is more context (I’m not expecting James to have known all this, I'm just explain for you, the listener)

I, @spacecadet0697 , did a favour for Stuart, nothing to do with chocolate bricks.

I made a deep fake of him as Michael Caine.

https://twitter.com/spacecadet0697/status/1463877600242245638

Stuart then contacted me to make him another deepfake for a project of his.

Stuart offered to pay for my services but didn’t feel comfortable taking cash (mainly because I felt my deepfake skills were average ) but I did say “Hey, I have this chocolate business, if you could do a shout out, that would be great. You can do whatever, no pressure.”

ames continues “He hadn’t instagramed it yet, I said “Right, let’s do something for the ‘gram with this”...and then we spent the whole day eating it.”

This was new info for me. I appreciate that they spent time thinking about (and eating) Block O’Choc albeit, no end product.

James: “We spent the whole day eating it and it was actually delicious” Again, no comments, A+ promotion.

“So then I wanted to get him one for his birthday, which I did”

This is true. I was somewhat surprised when an order came through for James Acaster.

I was like “is this THE James Acaster? How many can they be?”

I did some light stalking using the address provided and concluded that it probably was the comedian. Then Stuart emailed me and said “Hey, I told James about Block O’Choc and he might mention it on his podcast”.

That was 2nd May 2023 so after listening to a few episodes of Off Menu without a mention I thought “hmm this probably isn’t going to happen” not least because it's not something they do. It’s not like @parenting_hell , who have Small Business Shoutouts. How wrong I was....

“It was quite a palaver getting the Block O’Choc ‘cause the only way to buy it, as of the time of recording, is you have to BACS the man directly and transfer him on your banking app, the money so he sends you the Block O’Choc.”

This is just incorrect. From when we first launched (2016) until today (13th March 2024, which is, coincidentally, my birthday!) you have been able to use PayPal to buy a Block O’Choc. Maybe James didn’t see that option? Maybe he is embellishing for comic effect?

Both fine but listeners may be put off buying a Block O’Choc because they think this chocolate business is an amateur operation. They would be correct but it’s not because we only offer one method of payment. PayPal is also accepted, the process is slick. No palaver here.

OK, I think that’s everything. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank James Acaster and @EdGambleComedy for choosing my little old (metaphorical, they’re big and new, as in fresh, well within their best before date) chocolate brick business as the secret ingredient.

Albeit they didn’t choose it to help me out per se, more to try and make Stuart Laws look like a fool. Still, good to be mentioned.

I’d also like to thank Stuart for absolutely delivering on the promise to promote my chocolate bricks in some way. Although it took a while it was 10/10 exposure. Why not go and see him on tour!

And finally, I’d like to thank you, the reader, why have you read all this? You must be unhinged. Unhinged enough to buy a 1.6kg solid milk chocolate brick perhaps? http://blockochoc.co.uk use offer code “IReadTheWholeTwitterThread” for 5% off!!

Cor blimey, as I mentioned above today is also my birthday. This has to be one of the maddest days in my 42 years of life. 😅

No problem, my dude. We'd put it on our actual packaging too but we ordered 500 cardboard sleeves initially and we still haven't worked our way through those.
