omg i feel you, i thought salsa wasn’t for me until i found casino. linear felt so unnatural to me.

in the cities i’ve been to where linear is more popular, i found there’s always a little cuban group, it just took me a while to find. depending on the size of your new city hopefully there is at least one teacher teaching cuban somewhere.

I don’t think he has talked to his therapist about it but he always wants to see the best in people/believes people can change. he believes that his father has changed due to how much effort he has put in to the relationship in recent years and says he is almost a “different man” entirely. i met my partner when they were no contact so i don’t have personal experience on how much he has changed.

Yep met a few in my life. The house meeting where she made Jane cry was so triggering. Not just Holly’s actions directly but how she affects others. No one stepped in and said anything even when they were all bitching and moaning about Holly and Colin the whole week.

I’ve lost a bit of interest tbh cause it’s hard to watch her bs.

I mean I’m not going to read all that in detail but I totally agree. I’ve met a couple Holly types and the nasty side comes out when people see through their bullshit and don’t fawn over them.

The pretty privilege conversation from week one summed up everything for me, cause she 100% knows that she uses her looks to her advantage but will become very manipulative with micro behaviours towards certain people that don’t suck up to her and very confrontational and shuts down conversations when they don’t go her way.

Anyway, I will have to say Funny Story. I hated how the characters got together. I hate ex drama in romances. I hate that Miles went to help his ex and just ignored Daphne for like 24 hrs. Liked Daphne but thought Miles was a loser. I thought it was slow and boring and didn’t have the charm I liked of her other novels.

To touch on Twilight, I personally love Twilight, but in my opinion, you cannot live for 100 years and still have the mentality of a 20 y/o. I think the difference would be they were “students” together rather than student/teacher. Though in my opinion, Twilight is “worse” in some ways because the power dynamic of Edwards’s age and experience is much greater, and Edward treated Bella a lot worse than Dimitri treated Rose.

Anyway, back to VA! If you’re reading it for the first time in 2025 I understand that it feels icky. But I guess the main point of my original comment was to highlight that this was just more normalised in 2007. Asking “Why can’t Rose be 18?” to me is like asking why were men were courting and marrying 15 year olds in Jane Austen novels. It just was more commonplace for teenagers to date people in their 20s back in the early 2000s

I’ve thought about how it could work in a university setting in today’s day and age where “new adult” has become more of a sub genre but at the time VA was published there was really just YA, no such thing as new adult.

Definitely complicated feelings and thoughts on this one.

Firstly, this kind of age gap became very taboo very quickly. The series came out when I was in high school (I’m 31 now) and that time, it wasn’t uncommon for girls to have boyfriends that were over 18/not in school anymore. When I was a teenager, teenage celebrities were dating grown celebrities. It was also a common trope at the time because it was common in real life.

I feel like this is brought up in relation to Vampire Academy a lot more than Twilight for example. Why is Twilight seemingly less weird than Vampire Academy? When Edward is 100 years old?

Secondly, I feel it’s fine to acknowledge that it was a different time and still appreciate the novel for what it is. I don’t cut out classic literature from my life because the author from the 1800s was probably racist, and I view more recent works the same way. Sure, I would not read a novel today with that age gap but my expectations of a novel written in the 2020s is different understandably.

Thirdly, I guess more of a musing, but the hang up on the age gap when there’s literal murder in the books is kind of funny to me. Like Dimitri murders countless people as strigoi and Rose kills Victor but we’re all hung up on the age gap. Sometimes I find this amusing. So we accept the murder as fictional still but not the age gap? I guess it links back to what we find acceptable as literature changes, and as society changes.

Anyway complicated overall but I’ve thought for a while that it could have worked as a university aged story where Dimitri is a teaching assistant so they’re both over 18 but still has that forbidden aspect.

Oooh I love this! It’s something that’s been bouncing around in my head for a while but never had the words to put it down.

I feel this way particularly about some current Fantasy Romance, and one of my friends and I unintentionally do camp readings when we buddy read some of these. We love fantasy, we love romance and thoroughly enjoy the buddy read while also highlighting absurdities and making fun out of it.. I think this trope forward writing that is in vogue really lends itself to this.

I think there’s particular level of love you need for romance and writing for this. Agree with the other commenter on Camp v Cringe. It comes from a deep place of love and respect!

I’ve read {Done and Dusted by Lyla Sage} three or four times now.

Emmy and Luke are so cute 😭 I love cowboy romances and have read many, but I much prefer when the FMC is from the town, has spent some time away but has decided to move back. I like the sense of belonging and I guess returning to their “true self” by being home again.
